GT235 stall

A couple of months ago I bought a 1999 GT235 in pretty nice shape. It had a beat up Pirahna 44 inch deck that someone had swapped blades on and made it a rear discharge. I bought a brand new 48C deck complete and installed it.
It's been working fine but yesterday and again this morning it will either stall or nearly stall the motor when I engage the blades. Sometimes it stalls it and sometimes it will be close to stall but will pick it up and operate normally.
The deck is clear of grass buildup and I greased all fittings on the deck before I installed it. Anyone seen this or have any ideas?

I have a 2004 GT235 have you checked back/rear pulley/clutch that is fed from front pulley that comes direct from motor shaft ? Maybe its locked frozen and not slipping before initial engagement.

A couple of times this morning it wanted to stall and a couple of other times it took right off.

Is this mostly just when the engine is cold?
If so you can choke it for 1 second simultaneously with the pto being engaged.

Yes, usually upon a cold start. I guess that I haven't tried it when the engine has warmed up because once it goes, I mow until it's done and then shut it down. I haven't tried to engage blades with a warm engine but I will now that you mention this.
