Growling in Rear End When in 2wd, not 4wd. S373D

On my S373D (4 wheel drive, 3 cylinder diesel) tractor, while driving, especially in 3rd, I get some growling/almost a clicking in the rear of the tractor, seems to be on the right side, but only when its in 2wd, when I switch it to 4 wheel drive the noise goes away.

Ideas?

Probably a bad bearing/gear in the tranny. Not sure about why 4wd makes it go away - there's no signficant connection between the front drive and rear gear-wise that I could see would cancel anything in the back. Maybe since the front wheels usually "lead" the rear drive it's taking most of the load off the rear making it less noticable.

Anyone have a parts breakdown showing the gears and bearings?

I dont hear it working the tractor hard in 4wd, but then I'm iin 1 or 2nd gear.

Maybe when 4wd is engaged it takes some pulling load off the rear end. I don't know what it could be. I thing you will have to open it and look.

Does the cover the shift lever goes though just come off once you talk out the bolts? Anything special to get the lever to line back up when reinstalling it?

It should. Put it in neutral before you pull the top off.
