Green front axle oil?

I added a little too much Hygard to my front axle the other day, so I removed the allen screw in the bell housing to drain some excess. To my surprise, the oil that came out was green (like algae). I'm guessing it has something to do with manufacturing, but I wonder if any of the experts know for sure.

dyed oil helps the mfg's and dealers identify if it still original oil. Was not aware of gear oil being dyed but is not uncommon with hyd oil.

I guess that makes sense, since Hy-gard is JD's hydraulic/transmission oil. Thanks for the info!

:confused2:I was not aware John Deere had front axle gear oil call HY-GARD? Am I taking a rear seat on this?

The JD web site says Hy-Gard is a hydraulic/transmission oil. Here is a link:

It is spec'd for the front axle on my tractor. I don't know if other people use traditional gear oil in their front axles - I'm just following the manual.

You are correct, Hy-gard for the front axle. Straight from the manual:

Recommended Lubricants
Engine Oil John Deere Plus-50 or TORQ-GARD SUPREME (See SERVICE ENGINE for more information.)

Grease John Deere Multi-Purpose SD Polyurea Grease

John Deere Multi-Purpose HD Lithium Complex Grease

Transmission Oil Low Viscosity HY-GARD (JDM J20D)

Front Axle Oil Low Viscosity HY-GARD (JDM J20D)

Compressor Oil PAG Oil - J.D.

This has changed over the years. Mine uses GL-5 gear oil. There was a recent thread about this here:

Correct it has changed over the years. I neglected to look at what tractor was involved from the initial post. Have always used what oil is best for our ambient temp and area.
