Shot of the day... In the foreground the John G Munson receiving supplies from the Ojibway Supply Boat... They are downbound loaded with ore from Marquette and headed for Indiana Harbor... Behind them is the CSL St Laurent upbound headed for Thunder Bay likely for grain to bring to somewhere in Quebec along the St Lawrence Seaway... then at the very back there is the AlgoCanada tanker moored at Purvis Marine limited offloading petroleum (gasoline) Soo locks.

Kinda depends on the boat used. Some that do not have a self-unloading system the elevator will have a grain vac or scoop type crane.

The James R. Barker on Lake St Clair heading north as the Indiana Harbor was headed south..

June 1909, at the Canadian Lock on the St. Marys River, Soo Michigan, they experienced a free flow through the lock after an upbound freighter breeched the lower operating gates. A photographer trapped on the south side of the lock captured this image. As you can see, a free flow through a lock creates a rapids within the chamber making it impossible to navigate.
