A shikepoke is another name for a green heron. It is also used to refer to the great blue heron. In my family, it was used as an affectionate way for a parent to tease small children during play. My father and I would try to out do the other claiming the other was the bigger "shikepoke".

I love watching the Herons hunt on the Delaware canal. We also see the same one hanging out on a large rock in the center of a neighbors pond. They look almost prehistoric when they fly by.
Sure looks like a bird. But it's probably a fish. Hmmm..... wonder how I could attract a big flock out on my lawn. Right now there are patches of my lawn that look like the impact area for light infantry.
