Greasing Small Wheels with No Bearings

Hi, I have a small trailer with a tank and a battery operated sprayer for weeds, etc. (Harbor Freight or Ironton)

I try and do all the maintenance things as a general rule.

The trailer tires (maybe 10" diameter) have grease zerks, but won't take grease.

I removed the tire from the axle, and its clear the zerk just goes onto the axle, there is no bearing or anything.

I've tried replacing the zerks, and they still don't seem to actually take grease.

In the short term I just smeared some grease on the axle and put back together.

In the long term, what am I missing? Still a city-boy trying to learn rural living.

If it is about a 25 gallon tank with occasional spring & fall use, keep it under 5 mph and you will be alright with an annual glob of grease like you describe. They were not designed for long distance or speed.

Bad zerks or bad grease gun..... If zerk is drilled through to axle and zerk is not plugged it WILL take grease..... For bearing it probably has a nylon or other synthetic material as a sleeve bearing.... You are overlooking something....

While you had the wheels off, did you make sure the zerk fitting hole was clear to the axle hole? Since you installed new zerks, and if the hole is clear, that leaves a faulty/empty grease gun.
