I have a 4-year old 54c deck, and I religiously maintain/grease it. It works great. However, now the grease will not push through the bearings to the underside of the deck. It just squirts out of the top of the spindle, and makes a heck of a mess under the pulleys. What do I need to do to fix this?

Hate to disassemble the whole thing, but it sounds like I may need to do just that.

Thanks,

Todd

Sounds like you have a grease gun problem. The end that snaps onto the zerk on the mower deck eithers needs tightening or replaced. Hoild the end with your hand and see if the serrated tip will tighten up. If tight it is worn and needs replacing. Look for a replacement with three or more retention fingers in the end that snaps onto the zerk.

No, it doesn't squirt out at the zerk (which is on top of the pulley). The grease squirts out under the pulley. I can't see exactly where it is coming from, because there is only about 1/2" space between the pulley and the deck.

Sounds like you have over-greased it. Any chance of that?

Maybe twice a year, I pump in 5-10 pumps of grease into the spindles of my 54" decks.

But sounds like you need to remove the pulley on one and drop out the spindle shaft to see if it is overloaded with grease. There is quite a cavity in there. Plan to change out the seals and be careful not to blow them out with grease (if that ends up being the problem).
