How to remove old zerts and replace with threaded zerts. My zerts on dk55 are pressed installed and some are bad, need to replace.

Well - I've never had to replace a press in zerk with a threaded zerk. However - first you will have to have a threading tap, the size that will thread the vacated hole and for which a threaded zerk is available. The BIG CONCERN is - as you thread the zerk hole - none of the filings remain in the hole.

So - - safety glasses and face shield and air hose and q-tips and very fine metal picks.

If you want to replace pressed in zerks with threaded ones that usually involves removing parts, giving them a rudimentary cleaning and then taping the hole with a pipe thread tap. The hole may also need to be trilled out to the proper size before you are able to cut new threads. Then you need to clean up all the cuttings before reassembly.

I would be tempted to wash out the hole with brake clean after removing the bad zerk and installing a new push in with a bit of J-B Weld around the shank of the zerk.

I agree - replacing the bad zerk with another push in zerk would certainly be a lot easier - if it would work. I think I would try that first.

Thanks for the advise. I think I will replace with pressed zerts if I can get the old ones removed. Hard to get vice grips or anything to attach to pull them out.

What year is your dk55? I was surprised to hear yours were pressed-in; my 2006 DK45 has all threaded zerks. Of course, they are BSP threads, so I had to buy several spares from the dealer to keep on hand.

Vise Grips if possible other methods are chisel/punch and once I had a broken one the would not budge so I used a self tapping screw for my puller.

My tractor is a 2005 dk55. I got replacement zerts from the local dealer but can't get one bad one removed. They are recessed in the frame, impossible to get to with a punch. The tractor has 700 hours and previous owner did not grease as required.

Can you use a self-tapping screw to get a "Bite" but screwing it into the Zerk?
