Grease gun storage

That is my wife's tractor, and accessories need to match the outfit.... Heck, she even has her own little pink cooler on the tractor to keep some drinks handy when she is mowing.

I use a little contraption I ordered from Gempler's. It's just a plastic holder but keeps things a little more organized and does the job.

Grease Gun Caddy, Grease Guns & Supplies - GEMPLER'S

I have a similar looking holder that I bought at Princess Auto. So far, after a couple of years, the tray in the bottom is still dry. I use synthetic grease, seems like it doesn't separate as badly as some. I do notice the odd droplet of liquid lubricant hanging on the bottom when I use the gun so just give it a wipe with the rag I use to clean the nipples prior to greasing. I like that the holder has a notch to hold the end of the hose since I have it screwed to the wall just inside the shop door, keeps me from wiping grease off the end of the hose fitting with my pants.

I use a tall plastic jar that I bought when it was filled with pretzyl sticks. It works well. I have to take the hose or nipple off of it to fit it in this jar.
Whenever I have some paint thinner, fuel, or gasoline on a rag, I wipe it down.
I save old socks for grease rags.

would the drooling be an indicator of cheap grease?

Partially, I bet it is also a function of being 90+ f in the shop a lot of time.

So far for me, I think I like the 5 gallon bucket idea the best for my situation, but there are lots of good ideas out here, to me that is what makes TBN great

Nope - I have some pricey (relatively) Mobil 1 Synthetic grease in the gun right now - it drools too ....

Grease contains solvents - it's my understanding that the reason for this, is to aid the ability of grease to reflow back to areas that it has been flung out of ....

Probably explains why old, exposed grease seems to dry out and harden .... ;)

Bear in mind that the drooling is just the lubricating oil separating from the carrier. For many years (decades) I had over 20 different greases in different guns and some of the most expensive greases were designed to bleed the oil even in cold climates. Most greases of today will not separate if kept cold. Explain to your wife why your grease gun is in her freezer!!
Enjoy,
Jim

While my wife is very tolerant of many things to include my sons first duck waiting for the taxidermist, somehow I suspect the grease guns just won't go over quite so well.

But the shop beer fridge,,, adds a certain ambiance I would think. :D

Very interesting comments. I have 5 grease guns and none drool. Never realized it could happen. Nevertheless, I always end up filthy when I grease anything. The newer my clothes, the filthier I seem to get. Then the dog rubs against something greasy of course, and, the wife, well, you know....

 What is it about dogs and grease ?? :confused2:

You could be on a dog-less planet and somehow dog hair would still get wound around all the Alemites.

Lately, the wife has been eating some kind of potato-chips that come stacked in these neat blue plastic cylinders; Lays brand, I think.

These plastic tubes are just a perfect slip-fit for the barrel of a grease-gun.

I screwed two of them onto a length of plank, seperated by about six inches, and angled at about 45* or so off plumb.

I stuck my two most often used grease-guns in these potato-chip holsters and they are now easily accessible and right where I know they will be.

I put a long dry-wall screw on the board also and hung the plastic packet that my needles came in --- after tearing the shop apart searching for the needles.

I have never had a problem with the guns seeping/dripping and you could hatch an egg in my shop anytime between May and October. :)
