The only advice I can offer is to not place all the stone one time. Place enough to just cover and allow it to work in before placing the next batch. You'll probably discover that some spots require more stone than others and by layering, you can find out where they are. Seepage of ground water will create these spots.

Dirt roads are not about dirt, they are all about water. If you create a chute from top to bottom and get a couple of inches of rain in a hurry, you'll discover the truth in this. The cure amounts to creating water breaks and road angles that help take water to the downhill shoulder instead of allowing the entire load to careen down your road and drainage ditches. Erosion is not your friend, or anyone else's below your property.

This is my main concern. I have a large berm between at the bottom of my property where all of the cleared material is sitting.

I have never found any place that 1 1/4- does not work well. That boggy area! Come over here with your PU and/or trailer and I will give you all the 4"- crushed rock you want. I just piled it all up from the logging access road that I need to re-gravel with 1 1/4-I probably have about 100 Tons of the stuff. That was tedious picking up and moving with my Tonka Tractor.

Dig out about a foot of the clay till you reach the glacial till each side, about 8' wide put the 4" rock in and drive over it as heavy as you your make your tractor. You will need to do this progressively to the reach of the BH, so you have a surface to work on. Leave a couple inches at the top for your small gravel. As you use it you will need to add more gravel as the 4" settles in and pushes around the clay in the rainy times. This is what we do on construction sites so we can get access and keep mud off the tires. I tried to tell the loggers they didn't need the 4" but the said we always do it this way.

Just my opinion but I would go with gravel with some finer material for a steep slope...something like "crusher run" will hold and pack down much better than say #57's etc...
Without the fines the gravel will migrate at a much faster rate than with...

I am probably too late for this job, but I suggest investing in a roll of geotextile fabric to put down before the gravel. It does a good job of preventing the rock from sinking into the underlying soil and also significantly reduces hydraulic pumping.

Yep finished for now... will have to wait and see how it holds up in the rainy season. Thanks for everyone's input. Got lots of spreading done yesterday and today and feeling great now about my FEL. New best friend. Well BH is also! Turned out that I dumped half the load of gravel at the bottom and worked my way up. Got the hang of dumping and moving so there was little rake work. Because it was so steep in places I did not risk it and back drag down the hill with my FEL. I not that confident that I wouldn't accidentally pull or push a lever when I needed to do the opposite... so played it safe. Man I love my BX!

Love it and be careful. Be confident but not careless.
I live on a hillside and have learned the value of a Kubota or several Kubotas:D and how much work they can do and save me time and energy, which is starting to recharge slower/less than it did when I was younger.:)
I'm going to post a pic that I mentioned to you earlier and hopefully you'll NEVER see this side of yours at this angle. Print a copy to look at if you ever get cocky:cool: which is different than confident and careful.

John,

If that was you, what were you doing just before it rolled?

Believe me... this thought is constantly on my mind! My entire landscaping plan is revolving around how I can shape my yard so I have access to it all with the tractor safely.

John,

If that was you, what were you doing just before it rolled?

I had added another one car garage up the hill on the side of the 2 car garage. Where the drive was cut into the slope there was a 1' high straight up cut up near the door which became a sloped bank on back from the door. I decided I wanted the entire bank to be sloped for easier/better/safer mowing instead of the front part having the drop down section. Pulled tractor forward to the cut section and dropped bucket down, curled edge of front bucket to cut the edge off the straight up and down section and was backing up while rounding off the straight edge and it (the BX25) just laid over on its side in less than a half second. Surprised? Yes, I was surprised. I had done "basically" the same thing many, many times before. Apparently the angle of the slope and the lifting front end had to little dirt under the low side (none)of the bucket which just laid it over. The BH was in it's normal locked in position at the time. I've done the same or almost same thing (cutting edge down to a slope) with the FEL many times before but usually has been with a different tractor with no BH. The BH definitely makes it more prone to go over. I've almost turned it over a couple of times before but knew I was pushing the envelope of safety but this time it "just happened" and yes, it was my doings and failing to "be careful" or consider what I was doing before I did it with a better understanding of plane geometry which I almost failed in High School.
Almost turned it over one time crossing the steep crest of a hill and was so close that my weight was balancing the tractor from going over. I was so close I started to jump then decided to try and save it by turning slowly, carefully and turned the BH around to the upper side of the hill and extending it and pushing the foot/stabilizer down on the lower side of the hill then pulling the back end of the tractor around with the BH bucket. Unlike when I did turn it over I realized my precarious position as it was unfolding. When I did turn it over......it just went over.
