Grapple Install

This is Nelson at W. R. Long and I've enjoyed reading your post.

Thank you very much for posting the pictures. I do not always get to see the valve kits installed on every loader. The dealers install the bulk of the valve kits and they will just drill out a hole larger or make some modification to the bracket if it does not fit up exactly. Also they don't always let me know if there are any issues. We have well over 100 valve kits and the main differences are the mounting bracket, hose length, hose ends, and other items like the nuts and bolts. My goal is to make these kits as easy as possible to install and that all the holes align, hose ends are correct, and hose lengths are correct. You've helped me with your post. I'm going to make an adjustment to the hole pattern for this valve kit and with your picture I'll know exactly how to do it.

The generic bulk head plate is the 1/4 x 1/4 x 4. On some loaders I'm able to find a few bolts to mount a bulk head plate to, so I try to do that. The picture on our website is of a Kubota B26 with a TL500 loader and that one does have a few bolts to use.

I would like to ask your help. If you know of anyone else installing our valve kit and if they have any issues please have them contact me either by phone or e-mail. Our phone number and e-mail address are on the web site W.R.Long the 4N1 Bucket People.

Thanks,

Nelson

Thanks, Nelson. I know I promised you pictures of my install when I was working on it and never got back to you. Sorry for that. I glad you found the pictures helpful. Maybe your next customer that's installing on a Mahindra 2615 with the ML106 loader will have an even easier time with the installation. All told, it wasn't very difficult, just a hassle to ream the holes out a bit to make it fit.

And, I think you have a typo in your message... shouldn't that be 1/4 x 4 x 4 (instead of 1/4 x 1/4 x 4) for the generic bulkhead plate?

Thanks,

BR

Curly don't tell us that the grappel at that first dealer didn't work out.

No, it didn't. So I called Nelson and talked to him...and ordered a second WRLong grapple:D Of course, I had to have a dealer actually do the ordering, but Nelson talked me through (again) what I needed:p

I just ordered a WR Long bolt on grapple kit today through a dealer. I can't wait to install it!

Nelson, Why don't you start a new thread with exactly that request. Title it so people will find it when they search for WRLong (remember we don't always or ever remember the punctuation) or diverter valve or kit etc. Then folks can just keep an ongoing discussion with you as new issues arise. It will also help people find you and probably won't hurt your sales;).

By the way, thanks for the help you gave me on installation advice on a WRLong diverter valve that I got second hand.

Keith,

How do you like your Bolt on Grapple. I spoke with Nelson Today and am considering ordering the Bolt On Grapple. What size did you get? Have you tried it yet? Did you get the single or dual grapple? How strong is it?

Sorry for all the questions.

Chris,

I have not received my grapple yet. I ordered the single grapple and a hydralic valve kit through my dealer. Cost was $1200 plus shipping and tax.

I will post as soon as I get it and install it.

I decided on the add-on grapple single kit since i am mostly looking to pick up dead wood and tear out mountain laurels. My bucket already has a tooth bar. Talking to different dealers the WR long seemed to be the most reccomended. I also like how it bolts on to the sides of the bucket rather than welde on the top. -Keith

Keith,

Thanks for the info. I called my dealer today to get a price. I have a rear hydraulic hookup so I'll go that route to begin with. When I get the extra cash I'll add the diverter valve. Let me know when you get it how you like it and how you think it will hold up. I'm pretty rough on things. My wife tells me I should have bought a bulldozier instead of a tractor.

You may well find that once you get used to the rear remote control to operate the grapple that you will think of better things to spend an extra $500-600 on besides a diverter valve. I used my rear remote very happily for a couple of years and only got a diverter valve on my new tractor because it was part of a used implement package I bought. For grapple operation there is not any meaningful advantage to a diverter valve IMO.

I'm not sure I understand what you're asking, but the valve kit I got from W.R. Long was the Electric over Hydraulic Valve Kit shown at the top of this page.

I'm trying to either find the Hyvair valve that came with your kit on e-bay,or purchase an equivalent Parker valve from the same site.If I had the model number from your valve,I'll be able to determine whether either alternative is feasible or whether I have to buy the kit from Long. tx

Here is another supplier (Northern Tool) which has a valve similar if not the same as the Hyvair you want.

Northman Fluid Power Hydraulic Directional Control Valve 10.7 GPM, 4500 PSI, 3-Position, Double Solenoid, Tandem Center Spool, 12 Volt DC Solenoids, Model# SWH-G02-C3-D12-10 | Power Solenoid | Northern Tool + Equipment

And it's only $109 bucks.
You would need the 203221 subplate (1/4" NPT) or 203231 subplate (3/8" NPT) with it, depending on your NPT hose fittings. Look under "Accessories" tab in that link. They are $49.95. See if it isn't the same?

ERRL---Thanks for the reply.Based on the information provided on the northern tool site, the c3 valve spool type---a/b ports blocked and p/t connected (neutral position)---the valve would function the same as the Long Hyvair valve. However,if you go to the Northman web site for this valve,Northman has the a/b ports connected to each other and to the p/t ports when the valve is in the nuetral position. If the Northman site is accurate,i don't believe the valve would work as the grapple would flop around in the neutral position. Please correct me if I'm wrong!!!! tx

I'm not sure because I didn't get this valve myself.
But in reading the specs, it is exactly like the Hyvair that I have. I didn't go to the Northman site, but from what the Northern add says, it should work exactly the same then. Maybe a phone call to them would be in order. They could answer your question better than I can. It is a heck of a deal if it's the same as the Hyvair, so I would do that (call).

Bamarob, you'll like the WR long EOH valve function. Great to have on the stick.

The pressure relief valve on most tractor loaders are set at around 2,750 psi. The rated back pressure of the Northman valve as mentioned below is 2,000 psi. The rated back pressure of the Hyvair valve is 3,000 psi. If the pressure relief valve on the tractor loader valve were to be reset to 2,000 psi then the Northman valve could be used within specifications. If you were to reset the relief valve on the loader valve to 2,000 psi and it was originally set by the factory at 2,750 psi then your loader lift capacity would be 73% of the original lift capacity.

In addition the Hyvair valve is machined a little different internally than other DO3 type valves, which allow for a greater flow through the valve. This also helps reduce the pressure drop through the valve.

Just my observation after doing several hydraulic projects including installing a diverter valve on my FEL for a snowplow setup, I used a valve from the Surplus Center that cost $150 at the time thinking I would save money and build my own "kit".

Well, after I sourced all the fittings and QD's (some online and some at a local hydraulic shop) and bought custom hoses, then fabricated brackets, ect....

It would have been cheaper and easier to just get the kit from WR Long.
