Muhammad:

I enjoy your web site. Great idea! Why is the meter in calibration of 1-6? What does that mean in terms of grading vs if it was in degrees?

Thanks

Hi SCDolphin,
Slopes are sometimes read in grade to 1 rather than degrees.
Many reasons. Erosion control is common reasons. Different
soils will erode or "slide" at different angles. A loose sandy
soil will erode at much less angle than clay. Many of the
highway dept. engineers I deal with will test soil when
designing a highway and right of way. A loose soil may require
a 5-to-1 grade.(11.31 degrees). to keep from eroding. Where
a more solid soil like red clay may not erode until slope is
at a 3-to-1 grade.(18.43 degrees.) Many landfills I sell to use
a 3-to-1 grade as side slope of dump. Seems water will run off
at a steeper slope, but will tend to soak in at a 3-to-1 or less
slope. Most highway depts. use a 3-to-1 slope as a safe
side slope limit for their mowing tractors. Below is a graph
showing grade vs. degrees vs. percent of slope.

9.46 degrees=6 to 1 grade=17 percent.
11.31 degrees=5 to 1 grade=20 percent.
14.04 degrees=4 to 1 grade=25 percent.
18.43 degrees=3 to 1 grade=33 percent.
26.57 degrees=2 to 1 grade=50 percent.
45 degrees=1 to 1 grade=100 percent.

Hope this helps.
Rick
