...Most of the course was about how the odds were that the legal aftermath would be almost as bad as not having a gun when you needed it. "almost"

And that is a very important point!
If you shoot an intruder, there will be repurcussions. They may be legal (depending on the circumstances) and they may be moral (you have to live with the fact you killed someone).

Did they require you to do any actual shooting / handling of firearms?

Do not get me wrong I am not one for any licenses or stuff like that for our Constitutional rights, but an online course for a ccw makes me want to stay way far away from anyone who has taken it and attained a CCW permit fro

I think you take a far greater risk of death or injury from others each time you drive a car. Most people that go to the trouble to get a CHL have some sense of gun handling. Yes, there are certainly those that will injure themselves or others....that's simply the law of averages. However we should not deny people the right to defend themselves or others.

Been putting this off forever since the only classes I could find were about 45 miles away on nights I had to work.

Luckily stumbled across this website that you can do the required course online and if you pass the test you can print out your certificate. It cost me $39

I took it down to the Sheriff Office and they took all the info and certificate. Vioala, a couple weeks later I've got my carry permit!

Oregon CHL training, concealed handgun license, carry concealed, firearm safety training, CHL video, OregonCHLTraining.comOregon CHL training, concealed handgun license, carry concealed, firearm safety training, CHL video, OregonCHLTraining.com

Congratulations.

Now don't get me wrong, I would choose the on line course as opposed to sitting in some classroom for hours myself. But I don't really think online is the safest way to certify someones ability and issue carry permits.

No human interaction/ evaluation? :confused2: Did the sheriff even look you up and down once? Someone could display characteristics inconsistent with the privilege/ responsibility to carry and conceal a weapon. With no human one on one evaluation, those clues would go unnoticed.

Taking the class is just one step. The Sheriffs Office just takes the certificate, application and your fingerprints. (And money, of course) They then perform a background investigation. Usually takes a couple months to get the permit.

Yeah you do both, and you can carry anything you want. It seems the state laws on these fine points vary quite a bit. Some people brought their own firearms, some didn't. And a couple of pistols I saw, I advised them not to shoot them and they fired thru with ours..I am a firm believer in good quality firearms in good repair, and not cheap pot metal junk. Some people I guess would prefer to defend their life with a $35 pistol, or they just don't know any better.

Some people that my sons have taught have really not made up there minds on the "best" gun for them, so we have a variety of guns they can use if they request them in advance. This is especially good for people with disabilities for whom they usually do private instructions at no additional charge.

Quality is always emphasized, but some people really have trouble coming up with the money for a top of the line weapon, cost of the course and $100 for the background check.

Congratulations.

Before Missouri became a "shall issue" state, I have seen Sheriffs refuse to issue "Permits to Acquire" when it was still in effect. Without the "shall issue" provision, there will be disparities from one county to the next as to who can get a permit.

A thorough back ground check will reveal everything the issuing authority needed or at least that was the opinion of our legislators in Missouri. It was initially vetoed by the governor, veto over ridden then challenged in the Supreme Court before all the dust settled and it became law state law as Sheriffs in St. Louis were refusing to issue.

Others may disagree, but it has been in effect in many states for a lot of years without any issues.

just consider yourselfs lucky, I live in the oppressed state of Illinois that doesn't allow any legal carry. If you carry to protect yourself from the criminals, you are one too. Someday soon I hope they see that not everyone with a firearm is a criminal.

I live just across the river and shop in Cape Girardeau and have family in St. Louis, I absolutely won't cross the state line. I went to Great Lakes for my son's graduation ceremony and couldn't wait to get out of Illinois.

Yeah...you have my sympathies. Illinois is the only state that doesn't have some kind of civilian carry permit. All due to the idiots in Chicago and Cook County.

Maybe If Illinois would take lessons from other states things would not be in the shape they are here. I would be embarrassed to say I'm a government leader in this state. I know the expectation that everything could be perfect is unreasonable but it seems we have so many things going wrong and being the last state to have concealed carry is just one of them.

Just saw on the morning news. Illinois has the worst credit rating in the country. Way To go Illinois!
