Texas has a required range component, but it's so simple that they might as well not have one.:D

I don't even remember what Missouri's is beyond firing at the silhouette at seven yards with both a revolver and semi auto of any caliber; very easy.

My son teaches these classes and goes into a lot more stuff including some tactical stuff, but most do the bare minimum which isn't much.

Oregon is one of the very few shall-issue states which does not offer reciprocity with any other state.

A few states honor the Oregon permit, but it is very few.

A Utah non-resident permit is one fairly easy way around this.

I didn't know that, Missouri recognizes any CCW.

I had heard Utah was recognized by quite a few, but there was some discussion by some states on dropping them; don't know if any did.

I doubt I will ever leave Missouri again, so I haven't kept up.

Yeah, I was a little disappointed in the range portion of the course. And there was a couple there that was re-newing their lic. after 5 yrs. and they had no concept of range safety and protocol. I had to get the nice lady to take the mag out of the gun and open the breach and eject the round in the weopon as we were getting set up to start the range portion of the course and she had had a carry permit for 5 yrs.

Fear of the Range Officer in the Navy on the firing line was plenty of motivation not to ignore rules or protocol on the line.

All that is required is to show you can safely handle and fire both a revolver and a Semi-auto, and hit the proverbial side of the barn.

You have to shoot both a revolver and a semi-auto? Ours is either/or instead of both. If you qualify with a revolver, it's only legal to carry a revolver, but if you qualify with a semi-auto, you can then carry either.

In fact, that's the reason I shoot my qualifying rounds with the semi-auto and almost never carry anything but a revolver.

Isn't it different for you as a retired LEO?

Yeah you do both, and you can carry anything you want. It seems the state laws on these fine points vary quite a bit. Some people brought their own firearms, some didn't. And a couple of pistols I saw, I advised them not to shoot them and they fired thru with ours..I am a firm believer in good quality firearms in good repair, and not cheap pot metal junk. Some people I guess would prefer to defend their life with a $35 pistol, or they just don't know any better.

Been putting this off forever since the only classes I could find were about 45 miles away on nights I had to work.

Luckily stumbled across this website that you can do the required course online and if you pass the test you can print out your certificate. It cost me $39

I took it down to the Sheriff Office and they took all the info and certificate. Vioala, a couple weeks later I've got my carry permit!

Yes, in some ways. I don't have to buy a license; only have to qualify on the department's range once a year to be legal in any state, or once every 2 years to be legal in Texas. We have both state and federal laws to consider.;) However, both for LEO and other CHL holders in Texas, we have to qualify with the semi-auto to carry either, or a revolver and not carry a semi-auto. A CHL license has to specify category of handgun with "SA" (any category including semi-auto) or "NSA" (no semi-auto). If a CHL holder qualified with a revolver and later wants to carry a semi-auto he/she must go to an instructor and get a new certificate of proficiency with a semi-auto.

James, in Texas we do not have to shoot both; just shoot only the semi-auto to legally carry both. So when I go to the police range to qualify, I only shoot the 50 round course with my 9mm and get my certificate of proficiency. Unlike the CHL, my certificate of proficiency does not show what kind of gun I used, but the DPD Firearms Training Center has the records showing make, model, and caliber of gun I used.

I took the Florida non resident course and it is good in 33 states at this time. I am not aware of any other nonresident permit that is good in more states. Most of the course was about how the odds were that the legal aftermath would be almost as bad as not having a gun when you needed it. "almost"
