Tractor
Mahindra 3325
I own a 3325 and I bush hogged Saturday afternoon. First thing I had to do was replace a shear pin in the PTO shaft on the bush hog. I sheared it off last year.

Once I got this fixed I began working. Some how I kicked the high and low lever into netrual. My PTO stopped running but the tractor kept rolling on.

I thought I had sheared a pin in the tractors PTO. This concerned me because the brush wasn't that demanding. I stopped the tractor put it out of gear to investigate. I was getting ready to drive to the shed and notices my tractor wouldn't move. I thought I had done some serious damage. I only have 15 hours on the tractor but I knew if I had over loaded the PTO and sheasred off an internal pin or stripped a gear my warranty wouldn't cover it.

I looked down and saw the high low transmision selector was in netural. I put it in low and guess what everything worked fine.

This is the first tractor I have had where the transmission had to be fully engaged for the PTO to operate.

I guess you are never too old to learn something. All of my tractors up until this one had live PTO's.

Does your 3325 have an over-running coupler??/ We used to call them fence busters......as the brush hog will force the tractor forward until the momentum of the hog stops.... BobG in VA

Yes, it has an internal over ride clutch.

The 3325 PTO is driven off of the transmission, therefore you have to be in gear and moving for the PTO to be running.

The internal over running coupler keeps the PTO that is still turning when you press the clutch in from continuing to push the tractor forward.

I haven't unhooked my backhoe yet to use the 3 point. Do I understand that it works like my 60 year old 9N? That is the one thing that is a real shortcoming of my old tractor and I will be quite unhappy if my 3215 HST 3 point works in the same fashion. Also I have a gizmo on the outpost shaft that prevents the bush hog from kicking back through the "not live" PTO. Is this unit going to necessary on the Mahindra?

Offy, I might be misunderstanding you.....but I assume when you say "3 point" you mean PTO?

The 3215 DOES have a live PTO, the 3325 does not. With a live PTO the clutch fully depressed disengages both the PTO and transmission, with the clutch pressed halfway down the transmission is disengaged but the PTO is engaged. This way you don't have to "hit the ground running"....as I've seen some people say.

Also I assume the "gizmo" you are talking about is on your 9N? That is probably an external over riding clutch.

Offy, just replied to your email. I was incorrect with your HST. You have to fully let off the clutch for the PTO to engage.

Thanks Red River. My email is having problems and I am apparently able to send but not receive since sometime yesterday.
That seems to me to be a "not live" PTO as my 9N is. I am really surprised about that as Henry corrected that issue in the early 50's with his. That makes using the 3 point hitch difficult in some instances and without draft control either it is basically little more than a trailer hitch that goes up & down on operator comand.

With the HST it is different, with a gear driven transmission you would have to sit your cutter down and be ready to cut as soon as you release the clutch because the tractor will take off however with your HST transmission you can engage the PTO and release the clutch and your tractor will not move forward til you press the forward pedal.

Good point and since I haven't accessed the 3 point system on the new "Hindi" I hadn't realize that yet. Does that have any issues with the tranny heating up? I guess that it could be shot into "N" for long term in place use of the PTO so I reckon I answered my question. Thanks
