Gooseneck:Drop deck and NOT deck-over

Dont like making 100 new friends that think since I have a trailer they can borrow it when Im not using it.

That is the single biggest reason. But I also like the pulling/handling characteristics of a GN, easier hooking and unhooking as I can see the hitch on my flat bed instead of guessing where the insert is, its easier to get the load balanced right on the trailer without too much/too little tongue weight, etc etc.

Several reasons really, but the main one is not too many people around me have a GN in their truck.....so with my current trailer being a GN....almost no one asks to borrow:thumbsup: And I dont have to seem like a snob for always telling people no

I follow that logic. Fortunately for me, most all of my neighbors have trailers of their own. We only borrow trailers when there is a specific hauling need specific to the trailer type. Thankfully for all of us, it's a very rare occurence.

I find that most folks who question someones decision to choose a gooseneck over a bumper pull trailer have never pulled a gooseneck very far.

Goosenecks certainly tow better.

But having used both for my type of hauling, there are pros and cons both ways.

Dad has a 22' 12k trailer. Its perfect for what I need aside from being 2' too short. Because my tractor + loader + bushhog eats all but a foot of my current 25' trailer.

But having used both his trailer, and my 25' dual-tandem....sometimes bumper pull is nicer. Alot of driveways dont have a very wide approach, and if the edges are a drop off/culvert...it is challenging and alot of times I just stay parked on the road with the GN. But a bumper pull is alot easier to get in and out of narrower drives because they track the vehicle alot better as opposed to cutting corners so close.

And both pull nice behind my '16 flat-bed dually cummins. Only a slight edge for the GN. And my heaviest load being 8k....its not a workout at all for truck or trailer.

And if my current trailer was a deckover but a tandem 14k as opposed to a dual tandem 24k....I would probably not be having this conversation either. But I this point....I cant see the logic of towing an extra 3k of dead trailer weight, and wearing out 4 extra tires when a 14k would serve my needs perfectly. But I dont want a deckover if I can help it. Not that it matters a lick for the tractor.....its alot nicer loading the mini-ex on a lower profile trailer. And its alot easier climbing on and off of the trailer for loading, unloading, and chaining things down when the deck is alot lower.

Bumper pull trailers pull like crap and the weight distribution is a lot more sensitive to get right. IMO anything above a 10,000 pound load behind a pickup should be a GN. I pull a pintle hitch trailer behind my 6500 truck but that’s a different animal. There’s zero sway with it and any amount of tongue weight short of breaking the hitch off is good to go. Those are some good prices. Wish I could find a PJ for $5500 in this state.

Here are a couple trailer manufacturers you might look at:

RanchKing Trailers | Talk to us about your next trailer.

Lamar Trailers Mfg.

When I was shopping I looked at both of these pretty hard and liked them both. I got what I though was a good deal on a Diamond C 19LPX GN so I bought it and never looked back. Just offering these names because somewhere back you mentioned wanting brands you might not have considered before.

Lamar does have dealers in Ohio and PA.

Good luck and be sure to let us know what you wind up with.

I pull a bumper pull 22-foot boat trailer, 20-foot bumper pull flatbed utility hauler, 16-foot gooseneck dump, and a 40-foot fifth wheel. How the trailer behaves backing up is certainly different between bumper pull and gooseneck but setting up the trailer to back in is the same. I've used the Z method for as long as I can remember and it works for me.

One thing is with a 14 k trailer its easy to overload the tires. Look at adding 17.5. I have a 16k 30' flatbed gooseneck homemade and a 14k gooseneck dump made by load trail and like both. But been looking at hydraulic dovetail to replace the big one sick of the ramps. But get dexter axles and heavier tires they last longer.

I thought about trading my 10 ton trailer for a 7 after I sold my 310 backhoe but after I realized how little weight savings for a lot less payload I decided not to. Another plus is I don’t have to stay on top of tire pressure as much since they’re only half loaded.
