Gooseneck Dolly

This afternoon, at I-35 & U.S. 380, I saw something I'd never seen before; a pickup truck with a dolly hooked to the standard hitch, and a gooseneck trailer hooked up to the dolly. I looked on the Internet and found this Gooseneck Trailer Dolly that isn't exactly like what I saw, but sure is close.

I can remember when some RVers? used a dolly to attach their trailers, which was then attached to a trailer hitch on the car, before frame mounted load distributing hitches became common.

Bird, that sure is interesting. I wonder if you can move a loaded trailer with it? Would be handy in the fields putting out round bales off a trailer.

From the looks of the one Bird posted, it looks homemade. I'm sure just looking at the pic someone could build one similar and use it as Deerefan suggests. I know I could but no longer have a need to do so.

The one I saw was painted white and didn't appear to be homemade, although it may have been. It was parked off the street off the SW corner of the intersection. Since I was turning in pretty heavy traffic, I didn't get a real good look; not sure what the pickup was that it was hooked up to, and just for a wild guess, I'd say it was about a 30' gooseneck, and no load on the trailer. There's some construction going on at that location so again, just a wild guess, but maybe some the construction equipment was brought in on it.

I have seen a dolly used by local farmers around here but they look more like modified Semi Tandem Dollys. I have also seen on the net but not in person a thing that clamped to the rear bumper or rear hitch and had a wheel that swiveled 360deg like a shopping cart and then would accept either a 5th wheel or a GN.

I've seen them advertised some where and don't remember what the advantage was. The only thing that I can think that it offered was an additional braking axle. ... and your PU bed back!

I wonder how difficult these rigs are to back up? It seems to me that the extra pivot would make for some fancy driving in reverse. But it is a clever solution.

You see ones for semi trailers a lot and are called Joe-Dogs or Jeeps. I made one to pull my manuer spreader behind my ATV due to the hitch height and the toung weight. I saw one used by a guy delivering goose neck stock trailers. He had one behind the first goose neck pulling another. As far as backing up behind the ATV was not bad. Not sure how you would do it with double trailers for any distance.
