My mom grew up an orphan. The stories I heard make you cry. So my reasons are personnel for sure.

Your welcome to your opinion, but posting them might be a little sour. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I think helping people in your own community is what
MAKES it a community.

I stopped giving to all the far away stuff long ago...

Locals like the scouts, vol fire dept, etc get my money...
I never have to worry about high flying ceo's of these orgs...

Chris,
If the shoe were on the other foot, I'm sure your neighbors from all over would be there to help. Local or Not! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Does anyone recall after the Oklahoma bombing or the 9-11 events how kind and compassionate people were. This is how the world should behave towards each other. It's sad that it takes a tragedy to get people moving and pitching in to help. )

I wish that compassion would last especially towards New York and the U.S in General - but it didnt....

( Brian,

If I was you, I would contact one of the local newspapers, but don't just call the paper, figure out who the most influential "local" or "community" reporter is for your area. Contact that reporter directly. Invite him/her to some of your meetings, suggest that the paper may want to run a "series" of once a week progress reports, with photos of what is going on. The newspaper can be a great source for keeping this in the eye of the public to help keep the energy level up, as well as keeping donations coming in for the family trust. They can run it as a local "EXTREME HOME MAKOVER" type of articles with local people involved in the entire process.

You might also want to work with the various local churches, many of them have tradesmen who volunteer time and they may want to get involved.

JMHO . . . and since you are taking care of the dentist bills, candy will be on its way too.

BTW, I must be reading Chris's post differently than others, but I didn't see him as knocking this effort in any way. In fact I agree with him about all the solicitations that come in, and how so many LARGE charities are actually giving a small % of the donations to the people who actually need it. I think Chris was making a "general statement" about the big charities and was actually citing evidence that your efforts are positive. I too support local charities and ignore many of the large ones. In this case, I consider all the TBN members to be local, even if they are in a different state . . . that is why I am willing to chip in for this effort, but that is just me. )

Bob,

The local newspaper is already involved and doing just as you said.

We have a couple "coordinators" to do things on different fronts.
We have a GC for the actual building of the house as well as a person from the Church that's covering items for the community and the trust fund for the kids.

I don't have all the details yet (the next meeting is next Wednesday) but a lot of the materials and associated tradesmen are falling into place. Mrs. Zoom is calling around today to find roofing and insulation. She got in contact with a roofer who was a great help and will help her get this initiative known to the regional roofers association and said they do these types of projects.

I just wanted to mention to Chris and others that I did not post this thread with intent of soliciting donations but just to say that we're all pulling together for a good cause. My apologies Chris if I took your post the wrong way as I too also prefer local initiatives but will expand for catastrophes or other personal interests (like the DVD's for our soldiers in Iraq).

At first I took Chris's post as many of you took it, but then I re-read it and it sounded to me as if he was applauding your efforts and stating its good to help people in your own community as opposed to sending money overseas to the Tsunami relief and the feed the children thing on TV ( not that these are not good causes, just using them as a reference). He stated he gives his money to local places just as you are doing.

Brian, you may even want to shoot an e-mail off to the ABC and the extreme makeover people and let them know that this situation did not fit their guidelines for their show but you are doing something similar to what they do on their show and they may become interested and throw some stuff your way. Just a thought.

BCZoom,

You know I didn't even think of it that way.... I think of everyone here
like neighbors... Sorry.

What I mean is that all of us get hit for saving the
starving kids ( insert country here) and all kinds
of stuff.

I just think it's great that you folks are investing
your time, energy, and money in a local cause.
I do give to things that are not just local but I like
to keep my giving to efforts in the US.

Sorry if I offended, it was not my intention.

Best regards,
Chris

Steve,

I forwarded your suggestion to my wife (that's her department). I'll let you know what happens.

Chris,

No offense taken. I understand now what you mean but when I first read it (and replied), I mistook the first line of your post.

We had a similar thing happen in our area. A young husband and father was killed by a fork lift last fall. His family of 6 lived on 10 acres with an 800sq ft house. He was in the process of building a new house and had been working on it for over 5 years as they could afford it. When he died the community and his family church stepped in and finished the house in a month. It’s a beautiful place now. It’s a terrible thing to loose someone so young but really neat to see how much people care.

Brian,
I'm not much good at phsyically installing the electric work anymore, maybe good for an hour or two...... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
But I'd be glad to come over there to supervise(bark orders) or "inspect" if the GC doesn't already have it covered.
Just let me know.

Thanks Inspector for your offer. I'll let you know once we get closer.

For an update:
I've been working a lot with the Social Services coordinator from the church and the GC. Labor wise, it looks like we have plenty of volunteers. Material wise, we still need to get a lot of things.
A few of us have been "pounding the pavement" heavily looking for the things needed to complete the structure itself as well as furnish.
The first in a series of newspaper articles is going out today. If I can link to it or scan or something, I'll include.

Hey Brian,

Any UPDATES on the progress of the house? How about PHOTOS of the kids, house progress, etc. Have you been able to locate any corporate sponsors to help? What about the local newspaper articles?

Bob,

I've been trying to get a CD of the pictures taken so I could post but haven't gotten it yet.
Here goes (without pictures).

First, I hadn't realized how large the house was going to be.
The design will be pretty much a hillside ranch.
The main living floor (LR, DR, Kit, 2 baths + 6 bedrooms) will be 2400 sq/ft. The basement will be another 2100 and include a 2 car garage, family room, utility, 1 bath and a small kitchenette.

The construction of the shell and interior walls went very quickly. In 10 (working, not calendar) days we had it under roof and all interior walls completed.

We're wrapping up the ele, plumbing, HVAC, windows, doors... this week and insulation is going in this coming weekend.

Drywall is going up next week.

As for sponsors, we haven't received any large (national) sponsors yet but many local business' have donated time and materials. A charity golf outing is going to occur in July.

When we started, the local paper did an article on the project that covered most of the entire front page. They have 2 versions of the paper (free and subscription). I only get the free one but have heard the subscription version has been getting follow-ups. A couple weeks ago, one of the Pittsburgh news channels (KDKA) came out and did a news segment on it so I made the news that night. I don't think I did too bad but I wasn't ready for it. I had no idea they were coming nor the fact I was a "spokesman" for the news. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif I had surgery on my mouth that morning and my face was "puffed up" and I was on pain killers. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif Oh well...

Brian-

Is there an update to this great story? We could all use a bit of cheering up I think.

Thanks in advance,

Bonehead,

Yea, I think we could all use some good news. Thanks for resurrecting the thread.

The house is getting very close to completion but we've lost the use of many volunteers. Timing got a bit off as school and such started as well as suppliers have tapered off since the iron isn't as hot.

Interior painting is about completed. Kitchen and bath cupboards/accessories are on hand but waiting on flooring. We're so close to being able to have the family move in but labor and donations have slowed waaayyyy down (as expected). We arranged for the owner to get a home equity loan to complete things (at least buy the materials) and are now hoping to get them in within the next month.

I'm still trying to get the pics of the new house. It's pretty impressive. They were in not much more than a very small trailer and the new house has approx. 2400 sq/ft per level (2 story).

Will the family be able to afford to keep the house once it's finished? (You know, taxes, upkeep, utilities, house payment etc?)

Dave,

I try to stay out of the financing part of it but yes, that has been arranged/taken care of.
