The historical survey called this the summer kitchen, spring house and found it to be built earlier that the first deed for the farm that dates to 1811
Old house nut, here. Not unusual for a house to pre-date any record of deed. My family owned one house until the 1990's, that had been built in 1692, on land they did not receive a grant from the Penn family until 1726. In other cases, even when deed records go back as far as the suspected age of the house, the date at which structures were built is rarely recorded, or may even refer to other structures since gone.

The house I live in now shows in all county records as "built in 1800", or something thereabouts. But we know the house is much older, probably 1730's based on history of ownership, in fact we have a date stone on one of the additions to the house that's 1770's. In this case, the date reflected for the age of the house is simply the year the county started keeping records.

68F with steady light rain @ 11:00, calling for a high of around 70F for the day. From the looks of the radar, the rain will be around for several more hours. Low this morning was 61.2F.

Weather should improve by Friday, with around a week of nice fall weather with highs in the mid-70's to low 80's in the Ten Day forecast.

So today will mostly be an inside day I suspect.

More kitchen clean up.

More produce prep and getting things put away in the freezer.

Probably get out in the garage and do some clean up there.

Need to mix up another 6 gallons of glyphosate.

Hopper feeder probably needs refilled.

Beyond all that just see what else comes up.

Hope everyone is having a decent Wednesday ... (y)

Trip Day 7, 2 weeks ago..

Day started with taking a bounce sheet and cleaning the bugs off the windshield that was damp with dew. While a dryer sheet works very well at removing bugs, it leaves a film from the fabric softener that is worse, so don't do it. We had to clean the bugs off a lot.
Drove across the Missouri river again, filled up with gas at Mandan ND. Only mention this, because a car that had filled up on the outside pump left the gas station by driving immediately off the curb, pulling a trailer that bounced pretty good as it went over the curb. Not sure why they didn't just pull ahead a few feet and use the apron made for entering/exiting.
Destination for the morning was Abraham Lincoln State park. The guy at the booth to pay ($7) was very friendly, warned of us several school bus field trips that had already arrived, and in general just wanted to chat, so we did, until there was a truck waiting behind us, so I said I better let them in.
First visit was General Custers house, centered in front of the parade ground. At the time I thought they said this was an original, but later saw it was rebuilt using the plans of the original. The foundations of other officer houses are on both sides. They stopped giving tours the week before, so we and a school group peered thru the windows. This area of the fort housed the cavalry, which lived in barracks around the parade ground.

Then we journeyed up the hill to the Infantry post and it's reconstructed blockhouses.

Drew, good luck with Erie, that’s who keeps jacking mine up by a lot each time. Been with them a long long time.
They did do me good when son totaled the Subaru, but seem to be making up for it.
between homeowners, auto and umbrella policies, I was quoted more than 500 dollars less.
that's a lot of money.
after I get a formal quote, will confirm. I have a $3M umbrella and he only had authority up to 2.
But a phone call will solve that. Not too often they get ex insurance underwriters to underwrite...
only question on that was what boards I'm on and I'm now retired, off school boards and no longer head
of anything. And for sure no online presence.
Wait, do I need to declare TBN?

There are traditionally more expensive companies, like Travelers, who I worked many years for, and Great American and
Hartford and many others. Then there are the ones about 15 percent less, usually your State Farms and Eries and definitely
USAA. At age 75 I no longer qualify for some company's most preferred rate, but Erie's standard rate has always been lower.
And with having an independent agent with a real office ten minutes from my home, being able to do this "home town" was a good feeling.
I like the other agency; they simply have zero motivation to control my costs.
I on the other hand am highly motivated...
The new agent also handles Progressive who insures my rv, so easy to renew that.

one interesting option Erie offered was a 5 year auto insurance rate lock.
if I don't change this car or have a loss or add a driver in five years, they promise
not to raise the price of my car insurance over the rate offered today.
That sounds like it has value
they also have a disappearing physical damage deductible which for 45 bucks more a year
allow my 1000 dollar deductible to drop to zero over x years. I asked how many years and waiting for answer.
so many deer here and I still drive at night so maybe that's worth it. If deductible goes away in five years, maybe,
not sure I'll be around that long...but still buying green bananas. :)

seems only a few years ago I was paying 700 a car. Now it's double.

picked up all my prep chemicals at drug store for colonoscopy scheduled for two days after I get back from
rv trip. This prep has you drink stuff for five prior nights, soften me up. Highly regulated diet, they clearly don't want you
chowing down on stuff with seeds. No chunky peanut butter, only smooth. Etc
but I have to haul this stuff with me on the trip because I have to start the prep for a couple nights before I get back.
Then the night before, you get the drano pills.

great pictures Dennis.

PART 2: Day 7:

From Abraham Lincoln State park, waze said the quickest route to Rapid City SD was south via misc state routes and thru some indian reservation with an unmarked road. I decided to head west on I94, then take US58 south to Sturgis SD, then pick up I90. US58 was the shortest distance between the 2 interstates, but was almost 2 hrs further west to catch. overall time, it was only 20 minutes longer than the waze suggestion.
Heading west, we crossed into Mountain time, so some of my pictures are out of sequence due to the time changing back an hour. When we got to US58 I stopped off the exit, and saw we were only 10 minutes from Teddy Roosevelt Nat Park, Painted Canyon. This was originally on my list of things to see, and since we gained an hour due to the time change, we decided to take the extra 20 minutes, which turned in to about an extra 2.5 hrs.
Teddy Roosevelt Painted Canyon:

I inquired at the visitor center, how long would it take to drive the entire Roosevelt NP which was another 20 minutes west, they said 2 hrs. My wife liked the Painted Valley so much, we decided we might as well see the rest while we were here. Originally this was going to be a "shorter" day driving after the long day before (shorter being 5 hrs instead of 8)
The lady at the park must have been about 80 yrs old and really nice. We met a lot of nice people all over the west. She asked where we were from, I said Maryland. She said I see that, where in MD. She didn't know until I said, close to Catoctin Mountain National Park, the home of Camp David, then she knew...
The part of the road in TRNP that forms a loop is closed, so you can only go out so far then turn and come back. Well worth the visit with buffalo, prairie dogs, wild horses..

what do you do when a buffalo comes up the middle of the road at you? I backed up, luckily no one behind me. Backed until I was a trail off the side, and the buffalo took it, going right by the car.

No fast food in Medora, or anywhere else in that area.
So we headed back to US58 and traveled south. Enjoyed the drive, with magnificent views of Butte's off in the distance, including the highest point in ND, White Butte about 6.5 miles away (which I kept calling White Butt).

20250910_143420__vac_ND_Rt58_south.JPG

I didn't think we would have cell signal in these parts of ND so I took my old Garmin GPS circ 2008, but we had a better signal the whole drive than what I have at my house so didnt need the old one..
It was driving somewhere south towards SD that my youngest son called, and told us about Charlie Kirk being assassinated. My son didn't know who he was, and I only knew him from his "prove me wrong" meme's and a few of his videos, but it was a shock to hear. Since then I learned a lot about Charlie, and have a lot of respect for him. RIP Charlie.
Further down in SD, we took another road over to castle rock, and started seeing Bear Butt (butte) 33 miles away. Picture taken about about 23 miles away.

stopped at a historical sign, site of a terrible massacre.

made it into Rapid city about 7 pm, after passing thru a relatively empty Sturgis.
