Trip Day 5: Day started in Hannibal MO and ended in SD, visiting NE and IA on the way.
Took the tour of the Mark Twain Cave, which didn't start till 10 AM. only about 6 people on the tour. Mark Twain would visit frequently, and on one occasion with Becky Thatcher, got lost for 3 days in the cave. This is the original entrance, until a couple larger entrances were blasted out.
A one hour tour. Mark Twains signature is inside, among many others, but that pic didn't come out. Definitely worth the visit, and an easy walk.
From there we hightailed it west to St Joseph MO on the other side of the state, then north on I29. If traveling west, Highly recommend I72 to Hannibal, then continue on US36 west. It's 55 miles north of I70, and parallel. Much less traffic, and Interchanges at all the towns, with some at grade intersections in the country, but no traffic lights until you hit St. Joseph. No traffic, good road, 65MPH limit. Should have returned that way.
TBN member JK96 lives somewhere near St Joseph, you may have seen his thread on his magnificent timber frame house he built, or the Lake Corona thread. If you haven't seen them, you need to. He also has a thread on a wedding venue he built. Didn't look him up, but would have been a neat visit. As I recall, he shoots off fireworks for a living.

we missed the exit for any food, and one thing about the west, if there's an exit for food or gas, take it. It might be a very long time before another.
My wife's first time in IA.
At omaha city, we crossed the Missouri for our first time in Nebraska. Destination was Kenefick Park to see Bigboy 4023.
Lo and behold, access to see the engines was closed. Felt like Clark Grisswald arriving at Wally World, but we didn't take any hostages to go in. Had to resort to just seeing them from the interstate.
Turns out, they were repainting them, and the exhibit was to reopen last week. Since we had extra time, we crossed back into IA instead of spending the night in Omaha, we pushed north, staying at North Sioux City SD, at exit 1. HIE had a keg with free beer until 7 pm, and the mexicans staying there were getting toasted. Whoever thought that was a good idea.......
At this point on the trip, I was feeling pretty miserable. Since we left Ohio, I had been fighting something coming on, Didn't feel real good on the dinner cruise the night before, and my wife even asked if we should head home while in Hannibal, but I kept going.. On this trip, I was trying to get a visit to Nebraska and North Dakota, which I did. I'm down to 4 states I haven't visited.

Here are a few outside pics. Ill get a some inside pics when we finish unpacking. The dogs have settled in well but are less impressed with the new house than we are.
