Back inside enjoying some rest time.

I got the second 10 lb bag of fertilizer on the stump AND I also seeded a low spot on the lawn that we filled with last years potting soil. It is going to rain tomorrow.

Years ago I was told by a California Highway Patrolman that coasting, at least on a motorcycle, was illegal.

Yep, I heard that "coasting" was illegal when I was a teenager, and it MAY be, but if so, I've never seen such a statute. Can anyone quote such a law?

I also heard that driving barefoot was illegal when I was a teenager, later even knew police officers who thought it was illegal, but no one has ever been able to find such a law, in Texas at least.

Thanks for all the recipe suggestions for my marmot, I’ll let you know what I decide on. Whatever it is will require copious amounts of alcohol...for the chef!

Thanks for the input, Harv. I found your thread over on the RV forum, but trying to track down the posts on the track steer wasn't very successful. You stole that Volvo!

Have you taken on any serious digging projects with the Volvo or JBC? I need to cut a 90'x100' terrace into a hillside that'll be about 12' deep at the uphill end. I'm also wondering if I can use a box scraper on the skid track. Probably a million other questions, too, if you don't mine me askin'...:confused2:

In my limited experience the best digging skid steer is the Takeuchie (sp). I can稚 explain it but even with the narrower tracks they just dig. I know part of it is the radial lift. I致e used a few brands and probably the hardest thing to do is dig out four inches level in one pass like youæ±*e going to do a sidewalk. You either skip out or dig down. But the Tak it just happened and let me tell ya, sweet feeling. They seem to have some kind of magic when it comes traction and control. But then when you look at Cat track loaders, narrow tracks and unbelievable control and power.

Keep in mind Tak makes machines for Gehl and others. Same machine with a real discount when it comes to used prices.

That said, if youæ±*e dealing with typical sand/dirt/occasional aggregate for that project it might pay to consider renting a small Case or Cat crawler. The controls are the same as your skid steer basically and you can do so much more work in a much shorter time frame.

I have sandy loam here in Denison. It took less than an hour to scoop out a five foot deep, ten feet wide, and twenty foot hole for our storm shelter. It took another hour to level it all out and make it pretty for the installation truck.

I got the same lectures when I was a teen.

I found nothing about either 'coasting' or 'driving barefoot'.

If I remember right, back in the '50s my Grandpa, Grandmother and I would be headed back to Miami Shores from the beach and G-pa would always be barefoot.

There are two kinds of soil here, sandy clay and rock. I was thinkin' I could use the skid steer to start the pad, and when I got down to rock, either rent an excavator or one of those rock hammers for the skid steer.

Which brings up another question: are the mounts for the various implements pretty much standard? So I could go to the local rental place and check out one of those hammers no matter if I end up with a Volvo, Takeuchie, Bobcat, or whatever brand?

Thanks again for sharing your experience!

I heard that track type SS's will lose their track if rocks get into track.

You know that a new excavator will set you back a few 100 thou.
What is stopping you from buying a slightly used excavator with a thumb?
