According to my daughter, who was a commercial lighting manager for 15 years, there are stand alone like you and I have, replacement tubes that require wiring around the ballast and plug and play units that leave the ballast in place.

True Randy but, if the ballast is left connected / energized you won't realize energy reduction benefit of LEDs.

I'm told the Costco replacement tubes are Plug &Play but, also come with instructions for disconnecting the ballast??

Wow! This storm was one of the worst I've seen in a while. Plow was useless. Even had a hard time with the bucket. As soon as the snow was moved the water underneath froze solid. I spent more time spinning then pushing. It was like trying to move cured cement. Might have to invest in some chains if it keeps doing the wet stuff.

Rick, the costco LED tubes just replace the tube.

29° F and clear skies this morning, going up to 47° today.

Good luck with the deluge, RNG. Probably going to be quite a mess for many people.

Don, I got dipped strawberries ordered earlier this week. I got them from Shari's Berries. I used to get them for her every year, but stopped a few years ago when they suddenly started shipping berries that were about half the size they had been. No point paying that kind of money for normal strawberries. I decided to give them another go this year, but it may be the last after seeing the $30 for shipping . That's just ridiculous. They are supposed to be delivered today.

I used to play out in the cold all winter, too, L4N, when I was young. We didn't have hills where I grew up, but we had sleds and bicycles. I can remember not wanting to go inside because it would feel cold again outside after I warmed up. Seems I was a lot tougher as a kid than I am now. I have no desire to be out in the cold these days. I didn't even want to get out of my warm bed this morning.

Eric, my best friend lived in Seattle for awhile back in the late '80s. It's true that they don't get much snow there. They got some while he was there, and he said driving was a nightmare. He learned quickly to follow cars with ski racks on top, as those drivers knew how to drive in snow.

The people around here who study meteors say we're in for some snow accumulation this Friday evening. I hope it waits until after rush hour.

34°F, sunny, with a frost on grass and pastures. Forecast is for 67°F this afternoon. No rain in forecast for a few days so we'll hopefully start drying out a bit.

My plan today WAS a trip to Costco, in Katy, to take advantage of the 48" LED replacement tubes that Ron advised us on. It's 70 miles one way so, I checked Costco web site this morning to see if the site can confirm stock in the Katy Store. Now ..... those replacement tubes don't show up on Costco site, in 12 pack or 4 pack, for any price? PRODUCT NOT FOUND. Oh well.

Now I have to see what to fill those three hours, over and back, with?

I'm curious, to those who've purchased these retrofit tubes, whether you just installed the replacement tubes or actually disconnected the existing ballasts? It seems to me, that just plugging in the tubes would get you the LED benefit of Fast on but ..... if you don't disconnect / remove the exiting ballast, you not getting the energy reduction.

That sale was for only 4 days.
I replaced all my tubes with bulk package of tubes from Menards. They were Sylvania’s. Instant start and full brightness when turned on. I do see less electric usage. The amount of work required to do wiring change was more than I wanted to do.
There were instruction for rewiring. But they are long gone.

Good Morning Everyone!!!!!!

20ºF was today’s low, 32ºF presently; probably close to today’s expected high temperature. As long as it is +32ºF I’ll be happy. 5” of snow fell last night before it changed over to sleet, and later freezing rain. It is nasty crusty snow, It was a chore pulling Brogen’s tether free from underneath the snow cover. He had some difficulty moving through this stuff. Horrible stuff to walk in with crutches, Yes one of my few “stupid” moves since the fall. All’s well that ends well so “stupid” did not happen.

$13,000 estimate for all the discussed tree work here. Considering all the tree trunks already under load, the tangle of wild grapes, winter berry, autumn olives, and hung up widow makers in that thicket this seems reasonable, but I/We need to evaluate the entire project. Any opinions/experiences would be appreciated. Should I save a “Specimen Ash” tree? The chemicals used to minimize emerald ash tree borer damage is expensive and needs application every two years. I did not know this, but now OSHA advises against climbing any ash tree dead/dying from emerald ash borer damage due to risk posed by the trunk splitting.

Ron- Thanks for the link.

David- It reads like you and your wife really use your vac sealer. I waste a lot of brine and marinade with my food prep. A vac sealer looks like a useful kitchen appliance. Just what I/We need another kitchen appliance:rolleyes:

Phil- Seasonable temps today and tomorrow, warmer Friday with the possibility for rain>mixed precipitation. The weekend gets colder as well as next week with a couple of dry cutter systems passing through with possible mixed precipitation. This is nasty snow to manage. I wish that I could have been challenged with this event other than watch the plow guy operating this AM

Drew- I hope the dealer and Service Manager get it “right” this time. Your challenges with this dealership is not a “Too Big to Fail Too Big to Succeed” situation either; seems more like plain incompetence, Good Luck.

L4N- Have fun with the snow management. Thanks for sharing your childhood memories. It’s amazing that so many of us survived our developmental years w/o more injuries.

RonJH- Thanks for sharing. What a “Kissing Gate” is. There’s a whole different “English” spoken on the other side of the pond.;)

Eric- Good luck with the installation. Every time I hear “free” I think “expensive/impossible to assemble.”

RNG- I hope the you find the opportunity to find some nap time today and good luck with the solar installation tech, The guy who did a site review here had a really modern astrolabe, A lot fancier than my ruler/protractor/plumb line contraption.

Ted- Good luck with the acupuncture. I hope that it works this time. I really hope that they finally figure out the source and what is driving your knee’s pain and swelling. Your dinner looks to have been good eats. Smoking cuts of beef to a rare/medium rare is not that easy . I use a remote transmitting thermometer when smoking/roasting meat with the BGE.

I hope you Philly boys got an opportunity to eat at Pat's Philly Cheese Steak. I am related to the original owner. I do not think that Don would walk w/I 100 yards of that Sub Shop.

I hope that everyone is having a decent day.

My + thoughts. wishes, ad prayers.

60°F and .17 inches rain.
Not much but fell at inopportune times. My glasses don’t have wipers. Better luck today I hope.

Prayers for all
Be safe
Have a great day
