So I grew up without fear of driving in snow.

Never had a fear of driving in snow...never enjoyed it though. I do enjoy running the tractor and snow blower though!
Being older (not necessarily wiser), it's the probability of getting stuck, or off the road that bothers me...especially with this gimpy leg. Been stuck a couple times and once I had to walk about 2 miles (many years ago). I don't know if I could do that now.

RNG, thought of you when I saw this video of chrome "plating" being brushed on and wondered if you have ever tried anything like this in your various restorations ? Brush-on chrome - Chrome Paint using Brush | CHROME PAINT

I've seen it advertised, Eric, and been more than a little put off by the outrageous price. It's not a bad visual stand in for real chrome, but in the end it's just paint, and paint is not very resistant to scratching. So it's a no go for nuts and bolts, and probably wouldn't work very well for most trim pieces, either. After all, most of those things were chosen for chrome plating because they needed an abrasion resistant and corrosion proof finish, and paint just doesn't cut it in most instances.

I am going to be firing up the little wipe on zinc plating outfit I purchased a few years ago. There are two fasteners on the engine cover I'm working on, and both of them are in pretty poor condition. They were originally cadmium plated, but cadmium is now a big no no for most plating outfits, being a heavy metal and all. I'm hoping the light use these two things see won't over stress the very thin plating the unit is capable of, so we'll see.

More and more the safe thing to do is just stay home. You wind up in a ditch for this? I always worry about the other guy sliding into me so I just get as far over as I can and slow down
on small country roads. Well, no need to do that any more. When I drove to PA last week, I was able to drive 41 miles on local roads early on a Sunday morning without coming up behind another car. And if it snows, very few people drive. Those who do are likely to wind up in a ditch. I've pulled out several in three years. Plus two tractors. The ditches will get you....

Oh what a difference a year makes, right Ron? That brief snow on your motorhome down by the Rio Grand would have melted long ago...
That ski mask is the key, feels weird but sure keeps you warm in those winds. Must be drifting going on with six inches and 20+mph winds.


We need some pics of folks sledding and on a toboggan. memories of pulling long lines of sledders back up the big hill in town with my snowmobile. Now that was fun. Kids squealing in delight as they flew down the hill, particularly in the saucers going round and round and screeching in delight. More, More! Oh to be a kid again.

I hope I have not lost my plowing skills after a few years off plowing.

Kids sledding is always fun to watch. Local Metro park has a sled and Toboggan run. Need to go over there and get some pictures.

Accumulating snow associated with an Alberta Clipper continues today.

An additional 5 to 10 cm is expected before the snow ends this evening. Gusty northerly wind will also develop this morning and afternoon, which will lead to locally reduced visibility in blowing snow.

Poor winter driving conditions are expected from the general snowfall, and then from occasional low visibility in blowing snow today.

Environment Canada will continue to monitor this situation and update statements accordingly.

EC is talking 2-4", but I think we will get a lot more. You know those goobermint types, they always understate everything.

So far there is about 3" on the deck. I will take a look at the radar and see where we are in the storm.

When I got up I turned the block heater on for the tractor. I'll go out about 9-10 and start clearing the snow. I've got my french block heater, bib overalls and an insulated shirt. That is all I need for a 4 hour clean up of snow.

I'm with you Roy, the older I get the less I like driving in the snow. It isn't my driving, it is all the rest of the people. I've got 4 wd, with posi-trac in the steering axle, and brand new BF Goodrich KO2's. The KO2's are fantastic in snow and don't howl like the Pro-Comp mudders did.

PS; I took a look at the radar, Weather Radar - Britt, ON - Environment Canada, and it looks like we will come out of this dusting about this time tonight. It is only gonna be about 1cm/hr (a little over 1/3" an hour), not all that much really.

Roy I'm with you, driving when there is ice on the road is treacherous. Drew, I can relate driving a firetruck in freezing weather. What ever you do if a fire truck is coming up behind you do not stop right in front of him on an icy bridge.

We've been stuck in this weather pattern for a few days now, and it looks like it's gonna last at least another week. No complaints here, but down in the valley they're under a temperature inversion, socked in with freezing overnight temperatures and very dirty air. I thought I was seeing fog until the weather man explained what was going on during last night's news broadcast. This place is just high enough at 1200' elevation to be above the worst of it, yet low enough to miss the snow that starts falling just a few hundred feet higher.

Just heard from a friend of mine that his house survived the Thomas fire and he's back in it after evacuating almost a week ago. He's in a little town called Oak View, just south of Ojai, and in a little strip of land that was spared. All was lost to the east and west of him, but the town sits on a bluff overlooking the Ventura River, and the topography formed a natural barrier to the flames that was just enough help for firefighters to make a difference. Almost a quarter million acres burned so far, 7000 firefighters, and only 15% containment. And no sign of the winds dying down enough to stop the spread. Called Hughesnet again yesterday and they were able to get through to the repair man. I spoke with him long enough to hear that he hadn't gotten any of my messages or the dispatch from Hughesnet. Something about getting a new phone. He was supposed to call back with a time he could come out today. No call yet, and I'm not holding my breath waiting.

The weather's been warm enough to do some painting, so yesterday I dug the propane tank for the van out from under a workbench, blasted off all the old grunge, undercoating, and paint, and gave it and it's rock shield a nice coat of white. Didn't get to the clear coat until just after dark, and it was cold enough that I got a nice set of runs, but it's so far up under the van they won't be visible. Pulled out the old valves first, and will go shopping for replacements today. My local propane supplier wanted a king's ransom for new ones:confused2:, so it's on my to do list instead.

Same here, Bird. The one and only car accident I ever had was in my first year of driving, and it happened on an icy road when the VW squareback I was driving spun out of control. No wish to repeat that, and probably a big reason I left the winters of the midwest behind. Now I love being shut in under heavy rain (and once even snow), and not having to go anywhere but out to the garage for another load of firewood. Even when the power is out, the house is warm, there's plenty to eat (I can cook on the woodstove, too), and there's always a good book close to hand to help pass the time.

There are many more since I got mine 3 years ago. I have not kept up on all the models. We got the DUO 6 qt. Our previous model was the LUX 6 qt. Both work great. The LUX has high pressure only the DOU has low and high pressure. Some of the preset buttons automatically use different pressures on the DUO. The price difference is about $20 more for the DUO, but if you use the code AJ you save $10 on the DUO on the Instant Pot site only.

The two we use almost every day one is the LUX one is the DUO. The Duo has the extra pressure button to adjust the pressure but we really don't use it.

It's really good for mashed potatoes. We put garlic and potatoes and water in it, set it for 3 minutes and then use a hand blender right in the pot, easy, quick, delicious.

Well if farmer gets one I'll have to buy another to make that true. My wife did say she could have three going at the same time and always need a spare . . . .

For rice and beans it is a big time saver and you don't have to stir it or watch it for burning, just set the timer or push the appropriate button and as soon as it gets to pressure the watch the countdown on the pot. If you have a full pot and frozen veggies in it, the start of the countdown could take up to 10 minutes as it heats and builds pressure.

BEF, when my Wife and I started dating 14 years ago, I had a long goatee that was down to my chest (had a lot more color in it back then, too). She made it very clear that she didn't like it, so I trimmed it off, and have kept it pretty short since then. Earlier this year, she made a comment to a friend that she likes to play with it when it's longer, but I always keep it too short. :confused3: Sometimes, you just can't win.

Yea, l can relate. I had a beard when we met, have it in the engagement pics, gone when we married. Never had one since, except for short occasions like now when im lying around at home.
