was fleeced at the DMV this morning for eleven hundred dollars getting my truck, car, and two small trailers registered. For a use tax...and they get me each year, but it goes down. How far down. Oh we don't know. what...For the little mileage I drive that's a true fleecing.

An old lady decided to give herself a big treat for her 85th birthday by staying overnight in an expensive hotel.

When she checked out next morning, the desk clerk handed her a bill for $450.00.

She exploded and demanded to know why the charge was so high. It's a nice hotel but the rooms certainly aren't worth $450.00 for just an overnight stay! I didn't even have breakfast."

The clerk told her that $450.00 is the 'standard rate,' so she insisted on speaking to the manager.

The manager appeared and, forewarned by the desk clerk, informed the woman, "This hotel has an Olympic-sized pool and a huge conference center which are available for use."

"But I didn't use them," she said.

''Well, they are here, and you could have," explained the manager.

He went on to explain that she could also have seen one of the in-hotel shows for which the hotel is famous . "We have the best entertainers from the world over
performing here," manager said.

"But I didn't go to any of those shows," she said.

"Well, we have them, and you could have," the manager replied.

No matter what amenity the manager mentioned, she replied, "But I didn't use it!" and the manager countered with his standard response.

After several minutes discussion with the manager unmoved, she decided to pay, wrote a check and gave it to him.

The manager was surprised when he looked at the check. "But madam, this check is for only $50.00."

"That's correct. I charged you $400.00 for sleeping with me," she replied.

"But I didn't!" exclaimed the very surprised manager.

"Well, too bad. I was here and you could have." :laughing:



We have this annual excise/use taxes here too. The first 2-3 years on an new, expensive vehicle are pretty stiff. Imagine how much fun it is to buy a new car, then go to register it. Ka-ching! The money here does go into the town's budget at least and the total collected in a year is less than the town spends on road maintenance. It is an incentive to keep driving an old beater.

53F and cloudy @ 04:30 ...

Spent the evening doing clean up in the shop mostly ... got the big welding table moved further back towards the corner of the shop so I could move the MIG back where it normally lives ... even with the table unloaded, it still took tapping the sawhorse feet with a 20 lb. sledge to move it around.

Did manage to do a little upgrade on the small welding table ... used some angle from the Tool Gypsy wood chipper and a 2' x 2' piece of sheet metal I had to add another shelf:

The furnace guys are due here between 08:00 and 10:00 ... should be interesting ...

Not drinking coffee this morning. 46° with clouds this morning. Heading to 49° with chance of rain all day. Annual wellness checkup today. Fasting for this doctor visit screws up my whole day.

Longer range for those interested colder than normal east brutally cold Midwest could be numerous ice storms for east coast. Not as cold as last year in the East though

Was up on the ladder near the top of the roof yesterday caulking when a Merlin falcon chased a sparrow right past my head. That's not a surprise you want when up that high. The sparrow escaped into a sugar maple so the falcon did a low turn, came back and buzzed my dog who was lying nearby.

55 degrees going to 75 today in nice sunny weather, low humidity. Wow. How does one spell perfect, and a marvelous change from hot and sticky.

This morning I will put my gold plated license tags on the car and truck and feel "at home" just a little more. Yes Don, that's all in taxes for a 3500sf home sitting on 22 acres fifteen minutes from the center of town. So of course since there is no free lunch, or taxes...., I really was wondering how they could pay for things by charging so little. I'm sure the schools suffer and I think NC is dead last in state investment in some infrastructure issue, or even some educational standard? sorry, can't remember but if one only pays for a cow's ear, well the silk purse trick is going to take some magic.

Going to work some more on planting shrubs later today but first Sears comes this morning with my new kitchen appliances. Yeah. Even though the floor is about to get ripped up, maybe even starting this morning too, the tile guys said no problem bring em in. Ok. My challenge is getting the GC to get a carpenter out to punch a hole in the wall for the microwave outside exhaust. Otherwise that microwave is going to be sitting on a floor somewhere for quite some time. And I told them what day it was coming in...going to send my contact a reminder email and see what happens. The stove and fridge are swapped out easily; it's the dishwasher and undercounter microwave that requires more help than the Sears guy provides. I found people to give the stove and fridge to, so two families will be coming in to my garage later this week taking home their prizes. The fridge is no prize...ancient but with a new icemaker, it is going in my cleaning lady's shop garage, to keep drinks for the girls. Ok.
The stove was pretty nice actually, a convection oven, and it is going where it is needed to. My own version of recycling.

Good Morning. 0640, clear, 54F with 93% humidity. Forecast high of 81F this afternoon and a low of 53F tonight. Cool out this morning. And I'm up early.

My '13 Camry finally rolled over 15K, so I have an appointment early this morning to get the tires rotated. The guy at the service department told me it would be fine to skip it, but thanks to a dog and about five deer, I have had to lock down the brakes a few times. I would rather spend the $15 to get the abused ones on the rear. Then later I'm having a cavity filled in the early afternoon, with limited time in between to get the week's shopping done.

Drew, what burns me up is paying a grand per year for insurance on a 16 year old truck. I never pay attention to that sort of stuff, but last year when I went in to add the Camry to our coverage, I was shocked at how much we pay. The '98 Tacoma cost more than a '05 Prius. That was hard to get my head around.
