Ron, thanks for the tip on the vertical mower; makes a huge difference.
and yes I sure want paperwork in hand before anyone hauls my stuff, insurance certs, whatever.
When we moved 1100 miles away, I told the moving company I wanted the biggest truck and trailer and that they would be exclusively mine, I would pay for it and I would follow the truck down. That's what I wanted a price for. Fine, they said it's no problem and gave me a price.
When we firmed things up just before the move the price was substantially higher and there were not many moving companies around but at lest our items would be segregated and we would rent and pay for one truck and one trailer with no exceptions..... we got the contract and read it over.
It contained a still higher price than the one agreed to ten minutes earlier and had specific language allowing them to add other people's things to our truck and for them to unload and load again at will. This is a major moving company. When I said I was paying extra to guarantee one truck and one trailer for me, they said that's just the way it is and it might be necessary to add the things of others.
Well, with the price now nearly triple our initial discussions and their contract I decided to move myself. My wife wrapped things, which she wanted to do anyway and containerized our things in empty washing machine cardboard boxes to make loading easier. Our hay crew packed the truck on one end, relatives helped on the other end and we saved many thousands of dollars.
From this experience I have zero faith in moving companies and learned their contracts contain many wiggle room clauses to do anything they want and un-agree to anything they already agreed to. I'll never move again, probably but if I do it will be on my own and I'll hire others to load and unload. I can drive wherever or hire someone if I can't.
Others will have better experiences and there are probably some great moving companies out there but I would research and get personal experiences from other users including the BBB. Even then I would pay a lawyer to read the contract and make sure it's what you agreed to.
