Up until 6 or 7 years ago, it was legal to burn trash and yard waste in our little town. We never did. My daughter has allergies and was miserable when everyone was burning leaves.

However - the leaf burning I can understand...what I don't understand is the burning of trash. Plastics, adhesives, inks etc - nothing like intentionally poisoning the air.

Clean fill is the only thing one can legally bury..concrete, brick etc. To bury trash will put you at odds with your local Dept of Natural Resources and the EPA - yikes!

. . . actually I don't think it is allowed to burn household waste.

In Texas you have to have an exemption to burn household waste. That exemption is - if the local governmental entity does not provide on-premises trash collection service then you are exempt to burn the "domestic waste" produced on that property.

Domestic waste includes those wastes that normally result from the function of life within a residence— for example, kitchen garbage, untreated lumber, cardboard boxes, packaging, clothing, grass, leaves, and branch trimmings.

We have private haulers in all the rural areas. There could only be a small number of towns in Maine that provide trash pick-up as a municipal service. The first Maine town we lived in had about 10,000 residents, and about 30,000 summer visitors on any given day late June til late August. That was all private trash pick-up too.

The burning ban of household trash is a state rule, I don't know of any exceptions.

Our trash hauler drives an F450 with a homemade tall, covered box mounted on the flat dump bed. No compactor. It's a family business with no frills. They don't send out invoices or receipts, they just expect you to send a check or cash. The only holidays they don't pick up on are Christmas and New Years. The actual rate is $19/month, I pay them $20--just because.

I wouldn't burn trash, too much toxic stuff. We take ours to my wife's shop, she has a dumpster, 3 yards, $65, biweekly pickup.

19 degrees this morning and we will be banging nails again today in hopes of closing in the roof.
90% chance of snow tomorrow so I am rather sure it won’t miss us.
It will be good to have the roof on, windows in and start of the board and batten siding.

33 this morning light rain but temp is supposed to fall to middle 20 by morning then ice up to one inch on trees. That will probably mean power outages and maybe widespread. Hopefully the Virginia contingent will be safe. Looks like our friends in Texas had it pretty bad. Got generator serviced yesterday and ready to go. Had a wonderful meal with family last night, bison was on the menu and had to have some boy was it good. Might be last good meal for a few days if this ice actually does come. Please be safe

24 degrees headed to 32 today, and the snow is pushing through Virginia and Maryland now, heading up my way and unfortunately probably right at WayneB's roof.

Had a nice dinner at my friend's last night. Should have slept in, but didn't. Need to run to the farm early and put a tarp on my big LandPride mower, no way I want snow sitting on that. Drives me nuts that it's outside to begin with. The only piece that I couldn't fit indoors. so I'll put a big tarp over it, and next Spring, a varied assortment of critters will come running out of their winter home. One with a very thick steel roof... maybe I should charge them rent.

I bet there would be some interesting stories here of the strangest thing that ran out from under a piece of equipment.
Isn't that little armadillo cute?

this weather system is a fast mover. There is a large tendril of snow poking its way across PA headed right at me.
Not supposed to be here until 2pm, guess this is the wake up call. Bring it on, as long as it's snow and not freezing rain.
But don't go any further North until Wayne gets his roof on...boy I sure hope you aren't up there with the guys...there's a whole lot of permanently disabled folk who have fallen off roofs. Or worse.

Have had nothing more interesting than mice nest under the hood on top of the fuel tank during the winter, but this past spring had a Carolina wren build a nest on top of the rear axle of my tractor (parked under a shelter) in one day, the only day I didn't use it that week.

Sure I can, but I don't want to.
I can understand that. There used to be a personal (home owner) dump on our property. Had it cleaned up about 10 years ago. Then sold that property. We now have township wide garbage disposal. Cost $150 on tax bill every year. Will take almost anything. Most large stuff, unless it is pure junk is picked up by junk collectors before garbage pickup on Wednesdays.
