Today is trash day. This happens one day every other month. The county provides several dumpsters for the residents to bring their un-burnables to dispose.

Don, I'm very proud of the trash services provided by Wise County. At my closest drop station, you pay only $1 for up to a 30 gal trash bag.
Here is their fee schedule:
PRICES (Effective October 1, 2004)

30 Gallon Trash Bag $1.00 each
Shingles (Boyd & Decatur only) $18.00 per cubic yard
Loose Trash & Brush $10.00 per cubic yard
Burn Barrels $6.00 each
Appliances (White Goods) $5.00 each
Automobile Tires $2.00 each
Truck Tires $7.00 each
Tractor Tires $17.00 each

To Figure Cost of Dumping for cubic yard:
Length X Width X Height) divided by 27, then multiplied by Cost per cubic yard=$Cost to Dump.

Also at the main Decatur, TX dumpsite they have recycling of cardboard, paper, plastic, glass, tin cans, aluminum cans, oil, and oil filters (free).

With these services, there is just no reason for anyone to hoard trash, but sadly, some do. IESI used to be our collection service, but they went up to almost $60 per month now and always added days to the cycle in their favor when they changed collection days. They only picked up garbage that would fit in the 65 gal trash can and no oil, shingles, appliances, tires, etc. I normally combine a trip to the dump (about 10 miles to the nearest site) with other trips for the most efficiency. Many times, we don't have a need for trash haul but every two weeks (two or three $1 bags.) If I were young and needed a job or part-time job, I'd charge people $2 per bag and fill my pickup bed in our local area, making money and still undercutting the garbage service. Ironically, IESI is the company the county contracts to haul trash from the dumpsites. Go figure. . . :confused2:

Never came close to the law from any direction, but I always figured if making up BS was a valuable lawyer skill, I could do it.

I am blessed to have a Mom who often read to me as a child, and somehow instilled a lasting love for words in me. We had a World Book Encyclopedia set (how quaint that seems today) and a decent dictionary. If Mom caught you guessing or misusing some fact or word, you had to go look it up. Those were the house rules.

Jim I like your counties set-up on trash. I was just starting to gather the bags when I realized today was NOT the second Saturday. I really hate to miss "the day" then it's 4 months between disposal days.

Hmm, 100 + acres and you can't dig a hole?

I agree with Don. If you can bury it, somebody can dig it up. If you turn your property into a landfill, somebody may discover it if/when you go to sell and make a huge issue out of the site as a landfill. I know lots of people do the dig-a-hole thing, but after cleaning up my dad's property, I came to absolutely hate the idea. It cost me several thousand dollars and several weeks to get that place clean enough to sell. Some building materials are okay. Drywall, wood, and brick-tile-cinder blocks are good fill material if you don't plan on building on top of them.

I dig up a lot of crap, it's in the odd places. It's not good. I have been making dump and scrap runs for ten years on the stuff that is not buried. I'd rather make a dump run than bury crap.

I wouldn't bury trash either. We have $20/month, weekly trash pick-up from a private hauler.

Our normal weekly trash fits easily into one 33 gal. garbage bag. It's hardly ever a full bag. Everything else gets recycled, composted, or turned in for the five-cent deposit on beverage containers. We don't burn here, actually I don't think it is allowed to burn household waste.

Things like a turkey carcass or a large bone get tossed out in the field. Between the coyotes, foxes, and ravens it always disappears, usually in one night. Another form of recycling. :)
