Good morning! 64 now, 75 later. Just had a light rain move thru. Looks like that is it for today.

Not sure what I will get into today. Really need to split a trailer full of wood that has been sitting waiting since spring. Might be a plan.

Not sure what we will get into today. Tho I have a hankering for some local pizza. The original local pizza is available at the local brewery…..this could be a plan.

Back from the Garage Sale. Found Kyle and his daughter, they found a few things to take home.

I bought some plant rollers for me. For Mom I found some almost new handicap items for a total of $35. When I got home I checked Amazon and the total would have been $177. She was happy!

If I can’t mow then will continue with floor prep in caretaker ohana.

Flooring will be the Mohawk laminate from Costco. Not something I have any experience with. At this point, looking to make sure I have a smooth clean surface to start. That means cleaning up the paint I inadvertently spilt then some leveling compound in the low areas

Only about half cleaned up.

Anyone with experience laying laminate?
1 Originally thought thought I could just lay out as 1 continuous install, but have read that the cabinets shouldn’t be installed over floating floor. What about stove and refrigerator? I think the planks are to be installed oriented to the length not width

2. Would it be a viable option to install as above and come back and cut out cabinet areas?

3. Or is only sensible method to install around the cabinets? Likely harder to keep alignment if installing the long direction.

4. Or maybe installing oriented to width instead of length doesn’t really matter. Sure would be easier.

Mine goes under the cabinets and the dish washer and oven.
I did not want that edge and step to hinder getting the oven or dishwasher in or out,
hasn't been an issue.
What I was told that installing it the long way would make the space look longer while installing it sideways it would seem wider.

Drinking first cup of coffee. 54° with fog this morning. Heading to 73° with slight chance of rain. PT went good. Found all the items I wanted on grocery list at Walmart. Neighbor came over and helped me remove ceiling in Pole Barn that was falling down. Other than 8 bags of material to put out for garbage next week that project is done. Next on list is removing 1,500' of old field fence. May get started on that today.
Not a lot of color in trees around house this year yet. Did a walk out back of barn and found this shrub.

Lantana is a bush introduced by the British when they came in sailing ships in early settlement days. They bought it in potplants for their gardens as it has a lovely flower and lots of bright colours and a pleasant smell. However it went feral and has covered the country and taken over millions of acres of natural bush and farmland. (Just like their rabbits they introduced) It spreads very quickly.
Wattle trees are a pest too. They pop up everywhere. They are no use for timber as they don't grow huge and their life is relatively short. Maybe 20 - 30 years and there are hundreds of dead ones throughout my bush that eventually fall and become fire fuel. Koalas don't use them so I just spray them as they come up.

4 hours blowing leaves was enough,tomorrow I blow the other half...as Buckeye said leaves starting to fall but oaks leaves are dark green.
Decided to mow the front field afterward fill in 5 ruts that was the last mowing until 2021.

I didn't do it myself, but had the Mohawk laminate installed by professionals in our living and dining area in July, 2007. We have a concrete slab foundation and there was carpet before. And they did not have to go under any cabinets or such. Anyway, it still looks as good now as when it was installed 14 years ago.

I have installed snap together flooring from Costco, but not Mohawk brand. I put it in 2 bedrooms and hall over my garage. It’s easy to put down, just pay attention to instructions. I’ve considered doing my kitchen with some.

Mowing done. Did all but across the creek.
Cleaned up around porch box for pellets, then filled the box since I had pallet forks on. Then put grapple on, took down a partially fallen dead tree covered in poison ivy. How nice to have a grapple and a cab. Had to back in behind forsythia bushes to get at the tree. Hauled it to creek and dumped in creek, then went to other side and grabbed it and put on the brush pile. Then picked up a bunch of big fallen limbs in the woods.
Then, just above where the large tree had fallen across my trail to the creek, another poison ivy covered dead tree had fallen, so got it moved to the side, then pushed the large tree partly out of the way, but not all the way. Need to cut it.
Could not get chainsaw to start, used new gas. Took bar off and cleaned old sawdust out.
Did some other cleanup with grapple.
Pulled some old fence posts with grapple.
Didn’t get pic of trees with grapple.
Pellet box holds 14.

Pretty gray day today...dump run and trip to Randolph all done, but not much else.
I did go to rig the snowblower, but the upper link on the 3PH wouldn't thread (lengthen or shorten). So, a good soaking with PB Blaster should take care of that
Spent most the day with the wifey or Margeaux. Wifey is improving, but we're still looking at another month before she'll be able to really get around. Margeaux is continuing to learn to be a dog...still a relapse now and then, but she's picking up the house rules

Tomorrow, I hope to get the upper link rotating smoothly and get the snowblower rigged. If it dries up some more, maybe more mowing.
We'll see...

Yes, it was great to see Don and Caren, if only for a few minutes....I took my daughter. We left the house at 6:15 am. We all had different things that piqued our interests, so we ended up going in different ways. They invited us over, and I would have liked to get to see their home, but I had to take my daughter back to Giddings for her job. It seems one of the last times we saw them, was at their ranch, and I got to see their beautiful ranch home right before they sold it. I would have liked to see the "civilized" version of Whipper. Maybe next time I catch a snake, I'll put it in a box for Don to take to Whipper to have fun with.

We bought a potpourri of items. An older violin, a nice ladies shirt, a Beatles fully framed glass poster sized picture, a couple of puzzles, an unbuilt plastic Tamiya model of an F4U Corsair for my son, a small artsy fartsy 3 drawer jewelry box, and a Porter Cable RN175a roofing nailer with a box of nails. All for about $125. It was a good day, and a lot of quality people there. I didn't get to "sift" as much as I'd like to. I had my hands on a nice box of RC sandrail car stuff, but a young boy came running back clutching his mom's hand and I could hear him tell her sadly, "Mom, that was it, it was a great deal".....I over heard it, and handed the box to the young boy, and said "You have fun with it".....his mom thanked me and I told her I hope he likes it.

The lady who sold me the F4U corsair model, told me her husband had passed away, and was a military helicopter pilot in his younger days. He would buy the models, and keep them handy for rainy days. But sadly, not enough rainy days to get them all assembled.

My son is excited about the model, and I hope to get him interested.

Prayers for our team, hope Alien and wife get feeling better, Buppies, Randy, Ron, Drew (you sound like you're much better than a year ago my friend), Stepp and family, Mostly's wifey, David and Sophie, and those in silent need....and our country.

My grandson’s travel ball team had a tournament this weekend, they won today so they’ll play in the game tomorrow. It’s a lot of time and cost to keep up with league play and travel ball. My son in law coaches both teams. Tanner is a lucky young man to have two very dedicated and athletically talented parents. I coached for almost twenty years and I can tell you it’s a commitment.

Cloudy and 75 for a high, windy all day, chance of rain later.
Looks like church and groceries tomorrow and probably not much else.

62F and clear @ 21:00, high of 74.8F for the day.

Got Kubota greased yesterday, then mounted the FEL and got that greased as well and verified that stubborn fitting/pin was taking grease. Did not get to repairing electric for diverter valve or bracket modification.

After that I mowed the upper front. Basically it got double mowed, as I would mow an un-mowed strip and then make the return pass back over what the mower had thrown out to chop up the leaves further.

Once that was done I started on the lower front. The sky had clouded up and was looking like it was threatening rain. Got a lightning alert on the phone that said nearest strike was 24 miles away no danger but pay attention. A little while later I noticed that it appeared to be clearing towards the southwest. Wasn't too long after that that I felt a drop ... and just like that I was in a torrential downpour.

Of course, I had left the Kubota parked in front of the garage ... so I couldn't pull the Cub inside without moving the Kubota first ... ended up getting soaked to the bone. But I did get the lower front about 3/4's done. Will finish that up later today once it dries out a bit.

Nearby local station reports 0.21" yesterday, with 0.18" since midnight.

Started today with doling out this coming week's meds.

Then trimming the dead foliage off new irises. Looks like I didn't kill them and they are coming back to life:

Checked oil level in front axle of Kubota and topped it off.

After that I hauled a 50# bag of black oil sunflower seeds around back with the Kubota and put those in their container.

Then refill hopper, two sunflower tube, and one nyjer tube feeder, also two suet feeders.

Raked up the dead weeds and debris on the east side of the house where there will be a new planting bed up against the foundation, also last of weed on the east planting bed at the edge of the woods and hauled that bucketload up to the compost pile.

Starting to see a little color, I'm guessing at least 7 to 10 days until peak:

Then dug out another 30 bucketloads out of the compost pile to dry a little for screening later this coming week:

Hauled one bucketload of screened compost down and dumped it along the edge of that east planting bed so there is something to plant the rest of the Stella D'Oro's in.

Then finished mowing the res of the lower front.

The Woman had asked where the binoculars were the other day, she thought she had seen a bluebird out front. Typically the ones that migrate are around long enough in the summer to raise a clutch or two and then disappear for a while, showing back up when they head back south I guess.

Sure enough, noticed there was a male in the sparrow trap while I was mowing. So I stopped and let it out ... and then headed down to house and fixed up 30 live mealworms (dipped in calcium carbonate) and put 15 in the feeder in the front and 15 in the one in the back.

Still have west side down around the house to do tomorrow.

Need to wash out the foam pre filter for the Cub here in a few minutes so it can dry overnight.

I have done thousands of feet of laminate..... not kidding.... both for customers and for our own.
Yes, it can go either way. Like Lou said, longitudinal makes it look longer, laterally will make it look wider..... but....
Depending where the light is coming from.... you will see the seems. So the light reflection will highlight the end/butt seams. If your light is coming in from the long sides, run it longitudinal. If the light is coming from the narrow sides, run it laterally. You want the brightest light to shine down the length of the boards. Installing this way will make the seams "disappear".

For under the cabinets, I have never done that, always left a 1/4" away from the kickplate. This allows for any expansion. Always ran it under the stove and the refer.

Did you get the foam or cloth type underlayment? Not absolutely necessary, but does make for a quieter, 'softer' install. I did one floor without the underlayment and it was much louder and would occasionally "pop" every now and then when you walked on it.

Mostly, thanks for explaining Grayson. MD numbers have never added up. I used to track it, but too many inconsistencies. The major issue is they don’t even publish number of active cases, just how many new cases.

Did order new spark plug from Amazon for chainsaw. The spark plug in it isn’t the right one, but was installed by a Stihl dealer. I found proper one listed in the book.

A bit of background. The total area to be floored is about 7.5’x27’
A 3ft slider at one end to bathroom, bedroom divided by wall/slider at 90” from other. You might recall I scored a load of used cabinets. They need some rework before installation, so quite possibly the final dimensions could change. Normally I would install the cabinets before the floor, but 3 1/2 ft is a bit tight working space for this body especially on these knees. Except for 1 bedroom window in the end wall, all other doors and windows are in long wall, basically morning sun.

But I think I have a plan. I think running the planks the short way will work out. This will parallel the 2 interior door ways. The stove and refrigerator are across from each other so first 7 planks would run wall to wall, then a centered, full length plank remaining length of cabinets, then pick up the full plank in middle with a bit less than 1/2 plank each end. Floor would extend a few inches under cabinet perimeter, but open under most of cabinets. I’m thinking (hoping) that would allow for any movement due to expansion.

This laminate does have its own pad (very minimal), but I’m leaning to adding the separate foam underlay. Also have enough Redgard left from bathroom that I’m toying with rolling on a coat for addition moisture barrier before adding the underlay. Haven’t found anything decisive, but hate to waste the Redgard.

Had a brief dry period in morning and Sophie wanted to take advantage to weed eat the palms. Talked her into taking the Mule. Skies opened up again as she was parking.

About 500' Still need to pick up the rolled up fence. Not in a hurry to do west side of fence. Mowed grass in afternoon. Was a nice day to be outside.
About 20 turkeys showed up in my yard yesterday. They spread themselves over a wide area. Here are six of them.

David, lots of cutting going the short way. But easier to put down in tight places. When I do that type of flooring. I use 1/2" X 3/4" shoe molding. It looks better to me that 3/4 X 3/4 molding.

Drew, bought 2 gallons of Fluid Film for underneath 35' motorhome. I think 2 spray cans will not do much under your truck.
