One more flu experience: we've been getting the flu shot for maybe 20+ years and neither of us has caught the flu.

Eric, does your area promote flu shots?

A lot more in recent years. Free flu shots are offered to all health and social care workers and everyone over 65. For this winter they have also vaccinated school children up to the age of 11, as it seems they are the ones most responsible for spreading flu around.

For once I noticed a slight glimmer of daylight coming through the window when my alarm went off. Proof that the days really are getting longer - or maybe I'm just getting better at subconsciously hitting the snooze button :)

Rick, I think I missed a trick with the water tank. I ought to have built it high and out of something substantial, so that in another 100 years it could be converted into a house. Sodamo, how many 60lb bags would you need to build something like this ? I'm guessing more than 16 High Legh Water Tower conversion - YouTube

G'morning.

Kids are off from school today.

Not me. Headed to work in a bit.

35F going to 55F. Rain coming Wednesday they say.

Might stop and get some chicken scratch at Tractor supply today.

Have a blessed day all.

Prayers for our team.

Good morning! 31˚F heading to the 50s.

Today is a limited open house on the new trails. The neighborhoods that back up to the trails will be able to pre-walk and give suggestions on the rough-in-trail. There are 20 volunteers from the hiking club to direct and assist the first time critics. This ought to be fun.

The compressor capper has been solved. Like I thought a resident substituted his better craftsman compressor for our HF pancake compressor. Good trade for the Garden Club.
No seat time but got the oil changed on the gator and after a short search found a missing bolt and reinstalled a mower blade on one of the gardens riding mowers.

Funeral had perfect weather yesterday. It was nice seeing our friends from the country again.

Good news on the waste water (oil and salt) disposal well next to my mom's property. The company did not respond to the states concerns about the geo stability and their deadline has expired. If they want to try it again they can but they still have the same obstacles and protesters. The lost Pines Water district and Lexington School District joined the protest group.

Eric ... here is the old water tower in Columbus, on the SW corner of our Courthouse Square. It was built in 1883.

IMG_4829.jpg

Photo taken from the courthouse roof, during the 1906 renovation.

IMG_4830.jpg

It originally had a huge steel tank on top to use for downtown fires and the horse drawn "fire cart" was stored in the lower part. After It was no longer needed, the tank was removed then they tried to blow it up, with dynamite, but it's 3 ft thick walls wouldn't move.

It was given to the Confederate Daughters and converted to a museum in 1962, to honor veterans of all wars. The Confederate Daughters held their meeting in it for many years.

Good Morning!!!! 42F @ 5:00AM. Cloudy skies. High 58F. Winds SE at 5 to 10 mph.
Talk about weird weather. About an hour ago, a 26 MPH gust of wind knocked a glass off a table out on the porch. It woke me up. When I checked my weather station data, it showed that over the previous hour, the temperature had jumped from 46F 50 56F, then over the next 30 minutes, it plummeted from 56F to 41F. During the prior hour, the barometric pressure dropped from 30.03 to 29.95, then just as the gust hit, jumped back to 30.01. I guess nature abhors a vacuum!

Surprised Peanut doesn't mind cigar smoke, Thomas. Is it the shutter sound or flash that scares her? Maybe there's a setting on the camera to turn them off?

Is this national "be kind to chickens day", Kyle?

Sure miss Farmer's chicken stories. Hope he and his family are doing well in this new year!

I've enjoyed parts of the Blue Ridge Parkway on both bicycles and motorcycles. Sure is pretty!

Laid out a trench path from the garage to where the lateral over to the solar array will go. Now I need clarification from the contractor who will wire the panels on where he needs the conduit to meet the array; then I can lay out the lateral. I got the locations where the footers for the array posts will go, but now I realize I should have dressed the area a little better with the box blade first. Not sure between gravel or pavers under the array, but it needs to be smoother and more planer either way. One neighbor says he can dig the trench on Friday, the other sez he can auger the holes for the posts any time, UPS will be here today with the array parts, and I'm planning to pick up the conduit and steel pipe on Thursday. But you know what they say about best laid plans...:confused2:

The fellow that'll auger the holes agreed that the new gate across the boat launch road probably won't last long, and mentioned he had a nice chain...

The van still wouldn't start yesterday, maybe because this is the coldest it's been since the cold start problem came along. I haven't checked for spark since I did the hose job on the engine, so I'll do that today. And I'll pick up the fuel injection tester Tuesday while I'm in town...

Hope everyone's week gets off to a good start!

Funny you should mention water towers, Rick. There's a great big one on some prime property in downtown Chico, but it's not fit for water any longer and was scheduled for demolition. Enough people put up a fuss, including the ones that put cellular phone antennas on it, that a similar appearing tower, complete with a very ugly tank like thing on the top, will be built about a block over from where the old tank will be torn down. Not a very good compromise in most people's opinion because the main charm of the old tower was the way it looked, sort of an art deco thing with smooth curves and lots of rivets. The new tank like thing on stilts is an eyesore, but at least the cellular antennas will be hidden. And I wonder how long it'll take the bums to figure out how to camp in it?:laughing:

Good morning. It's 37° and clear here this morning with a very light N. wind. High should be 61° this afternoon.

If winds stay down, I'll trim a tree or two and maybe light one of our four burn piles.

RNG ... about 15 years I was getting a haircut, at the barbershop on our Courhouse Square. There were a couple of older guys sitting in the barbershop, swapping lies, so I asked them about the old water tower across the street. Both had been present during the time they tried to blow up the old water tower. They loaded it up with dynamite .... boom .... and nothing.

A replacement water had been built, I believe in the late 40's, early 1950's as they were building out the city water system.

Drew ... glad you're feeling a bit better.

Don ... nice the compressor mystery is solved. Congratulations on your new trails.

Buppies ... hope you continue to heal.

Kyle ... I didn't get the day off either.

Hope everyone has a great beginning, to your week.

Prayers to all.

Somewhere on the section of the blue ridge parkway between Roanoke and I64 is an exhibit about the old narrow logging railroads that used to be in the mountains. Have taken pictures of the kids there a couple times, has a waterfall.

18° and sunny. Floating holiday so I came to work to enjoy no traffic. Will take the holiday when it snows.
The big hype over last Saturday snow was a bust, with just some ice that melted overnight into Sunday. But fine with me.

24° going to 36° today, cold for a couple of days. Other than the snow we had late autumn, I don’t see much coming until at least mid February, if at all.

Not much planned today, too cold and Ellen is off today. I hope everyone feels better. Prayers.

Today started at 9 with a windchill of -1. We ended up with 5” of fairly light fluffy snow yesterday, out of the forecast 4”-8”. It provided an opportunity for some seat time from which a few neighbors benefited.

Several of us watched the football games at a neighbors house. I think Mahommes is an exciting player to watch.

Have a good week, everyone!

Good morning to all! Low of 24, headed to 45. A front comes across tonight, a total mixed assortment of rain, snow, freezing rain, and mixed precipitation. Depends on elevation and location as to who gets what.

Spent yesterday getting some good seat time in, spreading all the gravel is done, all the RR ties were placed first to contain the gravel. When we got done with the gravel, we decided to just finish it off and filled the RR tie bordered landscape beds with mulch. The son is very pleased with how it turned out.
Now only if the garage door people could get their act together and get the door installed...... (long story.... stupid people)

After all the gravel work, I saw the neighbor hand shoveling dirt off of a 16 ft trailer. So, I drove the tractor over, unloaded it in about 15 minutes. He was very grateful. Asked if I could hang around while they got another load, I said sure. About 15 minutes later he came back with another load, unloaded that one for him and went back home. Put about 9 hours on the tractor.

BEF, prayers sent for you and family, hope they can find the cause of his illness.

Drew, hope the repair is not too expensive and the canopy operates properly. Take care, do not push it too hard....

Mostly, hope your knee heals up quickly.

I have always liked the windmill operated wells and elevated water tanks of the old west out on the Ranches. There were a bunch in this area, but over the last 25 years, most of them have been allowed to fall over or just fall into state of disrepair. All the new tanks are the big ugly steel tanks now. Of course, they put them on the high spots / hills of the area, so you see them for miles.

Not sure what is on the agenda for today.

Everyone have a great start to the week! Prayers sent.

Here are some pics of the gravel work.

65°F and .02 inches rain.
Somewhat strange day ahead. Take wife to primary care for routine checkup and then dentist this afternoon. Her oral surgeon was able to reschedule her molar extraction.

Guys lost at cards yesterday. Mid game we were down over 14 thousand points, but managed a bit of come back and only lost by 7 thousand. Of course the girls loved it.

Prayers for all
Be safe
Have a great day

A clear and sunny 8ºF for today’s low temperature; a breezy, clear and sunny 16ºF presently; and I anticipate similar conditions and an afternoon high temp ~ 21ºF. Shoveled out the cart path to the woodpile and access path to our propane tank and was able to walk Brogen with the existing snow/icepack. I see a dry and slowly warming temperatures this week and a possible mixed precipitation weather event over this coming weekend. This PM I will set up the solar powered battery charge maintainer for the tractor. It will be a good week for solar panels around here.

Randy- Your dinner looks like great eats. I do not cook with salt, but some foods (like steak) I will salt at the table. I still do a fair amount of brining of chicken, pork chops, and some types of fish.

BEF- My + thoughts and prayers for your FIL, your family, and you. I agree with Randy. I always suspected that my Aunt-In-Law suffered an undiagnosed deep seated stroke that caused her to become and remain in an unresponsive sleep state. Whatever the cause I hope that the specialists figure out what is going on and hopefully treatment.

Bill- Thanks for the laugh.. There was a removable plastic spittoon attached to the vial. They want a fair amount of spit for analysis; and I did not think a decent goober would work.

Kyle- I have been called a royal PITA. Maybe I am a missing link? I am curious about all the auto-immune stuff and genetic makeup.

Bruce- I hope that your knee starts healing.

Billy- With the hot sauce it might taste fairly decent. Your ingredient mix is not that much different from scrapple.

Only a few resident chickadees this year- I have been consistently counting 5 at the feeders simultaneously. It has been a good year for juncos I have been consistently counting ~a dozen, but yesterday I counted 27. Lot’s of Mourning Doves; I have been consistent counting around (2 apparent flocks) close to 30 birds. 15 different bird species in total so far. I’ve seen and heard them, but no ravens counted.

Don- That is great news.

Ted- Nice tractor work. I spent ~2 hours on the tractor yesterday, and I forgot about Santa’s gift of a seat warmer cushion. Thank you Santa.

My + thoughts, wishes, and prayers.

14°F and cloudy this morning with light snow flurries, going up to 23° today. Looks like we'll get back up above freezing tomorrow. Been a cold weekend here.

Had another one of those "got a whole lot of nothing done" weekends. Not helping to shorten the honey-do list.

Sorry to hear about your Mother, Randy. Lost my Father in '89, and my Mother in '11. Still miss them every day.

I suppose it's a bummer for you about your trip, Drew, but it sure is better than getting far from home and getting sick. Hope your doctors can get things sorted out for you.

I started drinking coffee in my teens, and always with cream and sugar. Got rid of the cream habit fairly quickly, and eventually the sugar as well. In fact, I pretty much gave up coffee all together back in the early '90s, as I used to drink so much it was making me a nervous wreck. Even to this day, I still prefer tea. I do occasionally enjoy a cup of coffee (Wife drinks it every day), but always just black for me.

Kyle, we feed our chickens a 2:1 mix of layers pellets and scratch grains. They seem to enjoy it. We have a metal trash can that perfectly holds two 50# bags of pellets and one 50# bag of scratch grains, with just enough room to get a small shovel in to mix it.
