Not much for adding salt myself, figure I likely get plenty without trying. Reminds me back when we first moved into house we invited a friend and his wife for dinner. Home made spaghetti sauce as I recall. He looked around the table, then asked Sophie if we had salt. Her reply, Yes, but you can’t have it, not good for you. He didn’t press the issue, his wife laughed.

Brunch was really good, too much excellent food as usual and people we don’t always see often. Nice time.

Trouble shooting the hot water heater not encouraging. About 99.9% sure computer board is toast. Replacing just that board is almost half the cost of a new unit. Then who knows if the computer was only problem?? A 2006 unit, so 13 years old. An outside unit so also gets weather, bugs, geckos, etc.

Decided to swallow the bullet and order a new one. This will be 2nd one of 4 bought same time.

Up a bit early today...I never sleep well after time off...not for the first day back to work.

29 right now...high in the upper 30's which should melt some of the ice and snow we got over the last few days.

A late Happy New Year from me. The internet was jammed yesterday, tried several times but no response from distant sites. The previous day I had changed my broadband plan, just hope that was a coincidence and the real cause was all the well wishes that a new decade brings.

Drew, what a heart warming note to receive from your helper. It brings home how easy a life most of us here have in comparison.

30 going to 57 but then the rain comes tonight.

Thomas, sounds like a wonderful New Years Eve.

6,150...incredible, Mostly. I just looked at my hiking log for last year. I have well over 5,000 miles to go to catch you.

Split the rest of my wood yesterday, except what I still need to bring up to the house once the ground freezes, or dries down at the bottom. Took down the outdoor Christmas decorations yesterday but still have a lot inside...saving for a rainy day.

Good Morning and Happy New Year!!!! 53F @ 2:15AM in Porterville, CA. A mainly sunny sky. High 67F. Winds N at 5 to 10 mph.

The four days at Agua Caliente were very nice, if a bit brisk temperature wise. Only a threat of rain that never materialized, and New Year's Eve was clear and warm. Finally had a nice lazy afternoon to soak up some sun and catch up with old and new friends. The kitchen crew really knocked this years meais (10 in all) right out of the ball park. Amazing what they do with a couple propane burners and a smoker.

Our little band splintered yesterday morning, with one heading home, another going over to the coast, and me heading north on a shortest path to try to conserve tread on the front tire. I usually get one front to last for two rears on this motorcycle, but I lost track this time around and didn't replace both when I put the new rear on prior to the trip. There's still some shallow tread in the center, but it's well past the wear bars. Fortunately, there are only about 350 mostly freeway miles left, and it should be fine.

The ride north yesterday took me over several passes, most of which showed plenty of snow along the edges of the road. Temps dropped into the low 40s several times, and while the heated hand grips kept my fingers warm, the cord that powers the heated jacket was acting up again. A simple repair got it going again for tomorrow. Caution signs at the bottom of the pass warned of black ice and fog, a rider's worst nightmare, but neither one turned out to be a problem. The high winds on Tehachapi Pass were quite a problem, though, they broke the windshield off the bike. I had to hold it in place with one hand while trying to wrestle the bike to the shoulder so it wouldn't fly up and try to cut my head off! It was pretty much useless, so it got thrown off the bridge, and good riddance to it as it was never a good match. I have a lead on a better replacement, but I'm not sure they're made any longer.

Checked into an America's Best Value Inn here in Porterville just as the sun was going down, and enjoyed a perfectly cooked fillet at the steak house across the street. That was the end of pleasantries for the evening, as the person in the next room started talking to themselves, quite loudly, around midnight, a long rant heavily laced with profanities which clearly conveyed the notion that an exorcist was needed. Some of those rants were directed at the rider of that motorcycle in the parking lot, so I'm trying to stay as quiet as possible until I can get the H*** out of here first thing tomorrow. I don't think I'll take any pains to make a quiet exit, though.:confused2: If I don't check in later, it's probably because he/she/it chopped through the wall and murdered me with an axe in my sleep. Which, at 2:45AM I hope to get a little more of...

RNG, sorry your bike broke, sorry you had a loony motel neighbor,
but your pics are super. Glad you are having fun.

I've been on low fat diets, low sugar diets, and found the very hardest was a low salt diet, like I'm on now along with Toppop.
Am guessing half of the grocery store is off limits to me, and it means reading every single label. If sodium is over 450mg, back it goes on the shelf.
Have to watch how many servings they spec for that rating also. I no longer eat store made pizza. Not one brand is low sodium.
Almost nothing in a can is allowed. 1500mg a day isn't much...but it's the number one factor, allegedly, in helping my buzzing ear, so no goofing off on this one.

Everything I've read puts salt as the number one enemy causing a lot of possibly avoidable heart attacks.
Then sugar and then fat.

Food shopping this morning and then orchard pruning afterwards. 62 today in sunshine, then 78 tomorrow in rain.
Hope you all have a good day.

Interesting tour. I guess you could call that trip a 'winter trip'?

What is the big deal with riding in winter as far as the person in the next room is concerned? It isn't them putting up with the crazies that don't know how to drive in winter, or freezing his gonads off either.

Sounds like you should have replaced all your tires before you left, which surprises me for such an impressively technically proficient guy. Safety first...
All I could think of is you hitting a downpour on your way home and those mostly bald tires hydroplaning.
Tires and brakes, tires and brakes, had that drummed into me in my teens.
Your Mother...;)

When I zoomed into the campground picture looked like a lot of cold people sitting around. Wow are you folks hardy.

Drinking first cup of coffee. 30° with clear skies this morning. Heading to 45° with lots of warming sun. Did not get out of the house yesterday. Road I live on was a sheet of ice until late in afternoon. Dr. apportionment in afternoon today. Get some shopping before that. No other plans. I have be getting up to 20 minutes of exercises on bike each day. Two 10 minute runs.
Side effects from Flomax have mostly gone away. Still a Little heartburn. But every day is better.

RNG, sorry to hear you had problems during trip. Great pictures. Do some of the people haul their bike to this event?

Drew, I need too keep a better on eye on salt content in what I buy.

Prayers and best wishes for everyone.

Good Morning All.

Good Morning!!!! I'm still alive, and so is the crazy person next door. Its alarm has been going off for the last half hour. I've turned the wall heater on so the fan mostly drowns out the noise. That's why I much prefer camping in the tent away from civilization, but that's just not practical when trying to make long distances on the bike.

Yes, Drew, I should have changed BOTH tires before I left. The fellow that usually brings the firewood showed up two days late, leaving us to try to burn huge tree parts one of the cooks cut down just last September. As soon as the sun dropped down below the mountain behind us, temps dropped into the low 50s, leaving us to huddle around a smoldering, smoky fire that really didn't put out much heat. I got a lot of sleep this trip, preferring the warmth of the sleeping bag, and calling it a night at eight thirty or nine o'clock each evening. Including New Year's Eve.

Two fellows from the Reno, Nevada area did trailer bikes down, but then so did several folks from SoCal. Some just aren't very hardy when it comes to inclement weather on motorcycles. I'm very lucky the weather forecast for today is for moderate mid-sixties temperatures and sunshine instead of rain. With no windshield to hide behind, I'd have been a sopping mess in a couple of hours, and turned into a popsicle.

Hope everyone's day gets off to a great start.

Did you check air intake and vent for any blockage David. They're very sensitive to that. Does yours give you error codes? One of our shut down, a few years ago, from mud dauber nests in the vent side. It was the one, on the guests side of the house, so didn't get used very often.

Good morning to all! Low was 31 this morning, cloudy, chance of light snow showers.

We do not know who brought the science experiment / Petri dish growing whatever virus / illness to the holiday family reunion, but it is going round robin to everyone. Some started getting sick last Saturday, more on Sunday afternoon. We think it was from our East coast travelers / visitors, going throughout the airports and being confined is a small space with a lot of other unknown people.... I am sure they transported some Southwest bugs back with them.

My turn started Tuesday afternoon. It did not seem too bad at first, but yesterday was body aches, fever, sore throat and cough. Stayed awful all day, could not sleep for more than an hour at a time last night. I am not over it yet, but feel a little better this morning, just really tired...

RNG, sorry to read about your incident with the crazy motel neighbor.... seems to be more prevalent these days. I had a Goldwing windshield break like that one time... not a pleasant experience. I found a much heavier aftermarket shield, worth every penny for it. It was about twice as thick as the OEM one, much better clarity and scratch resistance too. I hope the rest of your return trip home is uneventful.

Drew, what a very nice letter! Things like that help to restore faith in humanity.

Belated happy birthday to Roy!

Wng, hope Coco does ok on the meds.

Jay, hope you are able to dig out of your “ ice age “ ..... we have only had one ice storm of any consequence out here in the last 25 years... made a mess of things for a few days to say the least. We get a lot of freezing fog which makes things pretty without all the damage.

I think I am going to lay back down for a bit.... everyone have a great day! Prayers sent.

Interesting trip RNG.

I was picturing “The Uneasy Rider” by Charlie Daniels. I could see RNG chasing the guy around the parking lot on his motorcycle.

22° when I left for work. Phone says it’s 37° at work. Waiting for Visual Studio software install to finish.

   / Good morning!!!! #104,419
Good Morning! It was 55° here this morning and we may see 64° this afternoon. It’s been drizzling rain off and on since about 5 p.m. yesterday and NWS radar indicates it will continue here all day. We really need the rain so ... we’ll live with a cold damp day.

I’m thinking today will be a “turn on the heaters” and “work in the shop” day. I’m trying to reorganize ... to get better use of the space. I put together two unused 36” x 18” x 72” shelves yesterday to get lots of misc. items better organized and off the shop floor.

I’ve got an old Marcy weight bench, with lots of accessories, that was replaced back in 2006. It’s been gathering dust and taking up space in the shop for almost 14 years. I’m going to take it outside, next warm day we get, and pressure wash it all then touch up nicks and dings with black paint. Hopefully I can sell it for a “hard to pass on” price and get it out of the shop and into the hands of someone with a “get fit in 2020” resolution.

Hope everyone is having a great start to the New Year.

Prayers to all.

   / Good morning!!!! #104,420
23ºF for today’s low temperature; a mixed sun/clouds 29ºF presently; and I am hoping for a mostly sunny afternoon high temperature ~ 40ºF. I am still dealing with the aftermath of this last ice storm, but between the warmer temps and the rain (changing to snow) predicted for this weekend hopefully the driveway will become less slick.

RNG- An interesting trip between a crazy person in the motel room next door and having a catastrophic failure of your windshield due to wind. It’s good to read that you re-linked with old friends and made some new ones. Thanks for the pictures. I hope you return home safe and sound.

Ted- I am sorry to read about everyone getting sick from whatever bug someone picked up along the way traveling through airports and airplanes. Too many people being forced together for too long a period of time is an air borne or contact spreading invasive organism’s perfect environment. I hope you and everyone else infected recover quickly.

I hope that everyone is having a decent day today.

My + thoughts, wishes, and prayers.
