I am late checking in today - working away to keep the engineering (money earning) side of my life going, in order to keep feeding my farming addiction.

Wngsprd, are you allowed to use soft lead shot for doves ? Shotgun shooters here have restrictions on what can be used, according to species. We are only permitted to take wildfowl with tooth-crunching steel, or use other very expensive "non-toxic" shot. Lead is allowed for other quarry.

Lead shot is permitted for dove and upland birds, but non-toxic such as steel shot is required for waterfowl. There are some alloys such as tungsten that are heavier than lead, but cost a good bit more, that are allowed for waterfowl.

Lead shot has been banned here for a very long time, decades, I think. A lot of shotgun users here are deer hunters, and they use slugs. I think those are big chunks of lead.

That's the way it is here in Kentucky.

The rules here are intended to keep spent lead shot from falling into the water and resting on the mud flats of wetlands where bottom feeding ducks etc. sozzel them up. Upland birds such as doves and quail don't need that protection so the rule doesn't usually apply to them. As to the deer no deer will swallow a one ounce lead shotgun slug but some of the western states have banned Lead bullets to prevent Condors and other birds of prey from consuming lead bullet fragments that might remain in offal piles.

Good morning. Plenty to squeeze in over the next 2 dry days, then a spell of wet weather coming our way. Last hay meadow of the harvest now cut.

We used split lead shot in varying sizes to weight fishing lines, in order to both "cock" a float and also control the rate of descent of the bait through the water. They banned lead for that use a long time ago. The first lead substitutes caused a few problems as they were quite hard, so when pinched on the line they created a weak point that could break with heavier fish or when casting. Now they have it right and the extra expense is not really a problem as we don't use a great deal of it and the shot can be re-used many times before it work hardens and breaks.

summertime weather, 76 out (still) and going up to high 80's in afternoon rain.
.68 inches came down in half an hour yesterday afternoon, wonder what today will bring.
Grass is sure green from this.
My big fireman helper comes this afternoon, not good timing, maybe we will get some overhanging tree limbs pruned until the rains come.
Might put the forks on the tractor with a pallet and a sheet of plywood on top and make a elevated work platform. My fireman friend was happy to just stand in the bucket and tries to appear fearless but I reign him back in; he isn't impervious to falling off either. And he has four kids i don't want to put through college.... I have an Echo 16 foot (12?) power pruner and hopefully that will get some use today. Then chop up the limbs and dump them in the burn pit. Will light that off this morning; I like to burn when the rains come later. There's plenty of dried stuff in there to get it going so some fresh green brush thrown on top should burn. Either today or the next time...

Need to find out what fruit trees I can get planted this fall. I have eight empty spots that need to get filled and I might just put apples in there instead of more peaches and nectarines and plums, which were the hardest hit. They apparently don't grow well here anyway...and I have some of each that survived. My main emphasis was on apples anyway. And with a promise from my neighborhood father/son ditching team that the ditches/swales will be in by November, hopefully the orchard won't flood next time we get a five inch rain. Two of those in one month last year drowned almost a third of the trees. Hope to do better next Spring. I decided that putting in almost a thousand feet of perf pipe was just too much for me to do. The son came over, looked things over, and smartly said "I want Dad to come look at this too". Good. Hope to do as much in swales as piping, but adding swales makes mowing and trimming a real headache. I'm already trimmer mowing a lot of ditches...
