Question for you electronic gurus.
12 volt turn signal relay on my SUV.
When I put an LED bulb in the headlight, it blinks very rapidly, maybe twice as fast. Is the relay for the turnsignal using volts or amps to determine how fast to blink (when to disconnect/connect the circuit)? I'm guessing the LED uses less watts, but it might use more. it does have a lot of diodes compared to just one filament in a normal bulb.

I finally got something done today...The stray grass under the shelter for the oil tank is cut down and vinegar applied, the tooth bar is off the bucket, the house was weed eaten all the way around and the disks were taken out of the weeds where they have been for 3 years. The rain chased me in at about 2. I was going to cut the grass, but that will wait. It aint going anywhere.
The biggest job to do is the roof for the tractor shelter and then adjust the chain on the wood conveyor and shove the wood in the basement. A couple more piddly little jobs like cleaning up the wood room of all the bark and dumping that on the compost pile. By then it will be time to take the BH off and put the fast hitch back on with the disks, fluff up the driveway and then back blade it.

You need a solid state flasher. The old ones needed the current draw of incandescent bulbs to heat it up so it would “flash”.

When I put an LED bulb in the headlight, it blinks very rapidly, maybe twice as fast. I'm guessing the LED uses less watts, but it might use more. it does have a lot of diodes compared to just one filament in a normal bulb.
In very old vehicles, the blinker relay is a bi-metallic mechanism, same as Christmas light string blinker bulbs. Current pulled thru the relay causes the bimetallic contact arm in the relay to heat up and bend away from the internal contact, breaking the circuit.

When you have less current, due to an LED conversion or burned out bulb, you'd expect it to blink slower due to less current draw taking longer to heat the bimetallic arm in the relay. But according to what I've read, it seems the relays are designed to be under-damped, such that there's an intentional temperature over-run controlling the reset time. When you lower the current, this temperature over-run is much less, and therefore the reset time is much lower. So, the off time from the blinker drops.

Newer vehicles use a microcontroller-based relay to mimic this classic behavior, and also blink at double rate when a bulb goes out, as a means of telling the driver there's a bulb out. I am not sure how these would handle an LED conversion, but they do make specific "LED compatible" blinker relays, so like @Popgadget already said, that's probably the thing to try.

Thanks, Kyle. Nothing new. Dr told me shortly after I retired that I had asthma, have had inhalers ever since of various brands. earlier this year, VA said i didn’t have asthma, have COPD. Will be interesting what I’m told as result of this PFT.

Hot coffee has been poured. 38° with clear skies this morning. Heading to 69° with plenty of sunshine. Did a whole day of conserve energy yesterday. Did go to a neighbors place a Birthday party. No liquor drinks. Did take time to enjoy the almost fall weather. Dr. appointment then back home for some more conserve energy.
September Corn Full Moon.
