FWT, hardwood (Maple, Oak, Beech) need to be well seasoned. Less than 15% dampness as measured by a meter burns well. Beech makes good overnighters (lots of big coals for starting the morning fires).
What type of chimney does your friend have?
"6 inch double wall insulated class A stainless"
He was raving about some of the shagbark hickory that he was using and really enjoyed. I think that's the case that both you and @RedNeckGeek mentioned, the wood just isn't seasoned well enough.

I'll bring my Tree Identification guide when I see him next Friday and we'll ID some Beech.

Is that double wall insulated pipe all the way from the stove or is there some single wall from the stove up a couple of feet?
When was the last time the chimney was cleaned?

Standard double wall stove pipe to the thimble, through the thimble and remaining chimney is double wall insulated class A. Picture for clarification After the 3 ft double wall stove pipe through the wall connector there is 21ft of chimney, due to having a tight house he also has an outside air kit installed. It's a catalyst stove, Regency 3500. Wood is below 20% moisture content. The wood he's been burning has been a mix of shagbark hickory, cherry, red oak and ash.

My guess is that the wood just isn't seasoned well enough.
EDIT: Chimney is brand new, first season in operation.

How much is a ridgeline bed of firewood worth?
dad's mail lady asked my sister if they could buy a load of dry firewood from my dad, as they ran out. We said yes, but they came yesterday with no one there to tell them what to get, and they backed up to garage and loaded a load of the maple wood that was cut last year. I did get him on camera looking in the building at the firewood that has been in there for about 30 yrs, it's good and dry. But they took the easiest to get.
I told my sister, if this is a one time thing, give them the wood. If they expect more, then they need to pay something. I reminded my sister that stored wood is dad's backup heat, in case all else fails.

FWT, I don't think he is burning 'hot' enough. BUT before that he needs to properly align the pipe from the stove up to the elbow and screw it in place with three screws. The same with the pipe that goes into the stove.
Load the stove and let her rip until the thermometer on the stove gets to 550°F and then damper it down to 'the sweet spot'. The sweet spot is different on every stove.
