Does anybody know of a good deer repellent?
1. Putrefied egg solids and/or soured milk + water. It’s pretty stinky though.
2. Peppermint extract + water.
We have used both and both seem to work in terms of keeping them from eating things we don’t want them to eat … until it rains.
I added Cayenne powder to No. 1 above to give it an extra kick … so that if they got past the scent and decided to have a nibble anyways they might not care for the taste.
Unfortunately I think adding the Cayenne powder created an issue with the sprayer clogging.
I still have about a gallon out in the garage that should be good and stinky by now (over a year old) and I need to pour off the top juice leaving the Cayenne powder in the bottom of the jug.
On No. 2 we tried that this year and it seemed to be working … and then we had several days of near constant rain. Before I could get back out there and respray the deer came through and clipped most of the Sunny Boy tomatoes.
Apparently they don’t care whether it’s raining or not if they are hungry.
That was before I had the monofilament fence up though.
After they clipped the plants we caged the Sunny Boys’ and got the monofilament fence up and have had no further predation on them. They seemed to have recovered quite well.
We caged the Bush Beefsteak’s as they were planted and they were never touched … other than squirrels digging at their bases to try and bury food for later.
We used 2” x 3” welded wire 2’ tall for the cages because that was what we had and it was free. (Chicken wire/poultry netting would have worked too … and kept the squirrels from digging at the bases of the plants)
If I was buying materials for protective cages I’d probably go taller.
The largest Sunny Boy had outgrown that … so we pulled the welded wire cage and put a normal 54” tall tomato support cage around it several days ago and have had no issues … so this evening we pulled the welded wire cages on the rest of the Sunny Boys and put regular tomato cages on them.
Probably won’t do that on the Bush Beefsteaks as they are only supposed to get 2’ tall.
You have to really diligent about respraying as soon as you can though after the rain stops.
Woman sprayed with peppermint extract + water a few days ago, resprayed everything again tonight after we finished putting the normal cages on.
If not I may have to utilize wire cages.
They’ve worked well here.
