Good Afternoon Don,
Does anybody know of a good deer repellent?
If not I may have to utilize wire cages.
Don, my wife has been tying up small bags of Irish Spring soap with some other ingredients that I will find out what that is ! The bags are like a mesh material and she has them hung all around the garden !

Good (Sunday) morning. Overnight Low of 4.9C and it's presently 7.1C (heading to 14C), some high cloud & calm.

Regarding the San Diego Zoo; It was decades ago when I was once there (Navy port visit). The place is huge and, if you're on foot, would take more than a couple of days to see everything. I remember that they had double-decker bus tours through the zoo, so that's an option Drew.

As usual, I'm off to Church in a while and then the rest of the day is His.

That's about it, take care all.

My wife also tried hanging Irish Spring soap. It didn’t bother the deer at all. They ate her hostas that were inches away from the soap

Was talking to dad some about the battle of the bulge book I ordered, and I mentioned Liege Belgium. He said they have 2 cemeteries there. I asked, were you there, and he said I helped take dead people there. Never heard that one before. He has a portrait that was done in Namur Belgium.

My dad was also in the battle of the bulge pretty tough on all concerned tanks ran right thru his group
My grandfather was part of the force that Patton forged into Bastogne. He got shrapnel in his leg from a landmine while clinging to a duece and a half. Or something like that.

I got the old Deere riding mower going again. Turns out I need it because the Steiner beast's 72" cut won't fit in some tight places. The Deere has a 42" deck. The vacuum fuel pump from Amazon/China came in and I put it on with fresh 1/4" fuel line. I went ahead and cleaned the carb since it had been surging badly the day before. Now it idles and purrs like a kitten. It took a while to get the K46 bled/purged of internal air. But I'm happy because it goes forward and reverse as it is supposed to, and the tiny little pin that actuates a neutral when you pull a rod that sticks out below the rear gas tank works too. I might need to adjust the for/rev rod's threaded adjustment. It has too much forward and not as much reverse. Maybe I'll like it like that.

BTW, my daughter's birthday is today. We will celebrate tomorrow after church, as she and her steady went to the beach.
The deere rider is sentimental to me, since my FIL paid for half as a gift, for me and the wife giving him his first grandchild. Hopefully I can keep it going another 19 years. It actually only has about 500 hours, but we can mow our acre lawn in about an hour or a bit more, so figure it has mowed our yard maybe 400 times? It could use a new hood, the old one is all cracked up, but still there.

Prayers Buppies and wifey. Not much sleep for me either. Wondering if I need to turbocharge my breathing at night with a cpap?

Tomorrow is busy day at church, new pastor to be installed. Also the kids going to church camp are supposed to be there to show the church what they are paying for. I think 12-14 kids are going.

The motocross races today were very exciting. They raced at Thunder Valley race park in Colorado. It was televised nationwide on NBC. Yamaha won the overall 250 class, while Honda won the overall 450 class.

Don, did Whipper run off the deer for you? Doesn't someone make a motion sensor water sprinkler designed to squirt them when they get close?

Helogabals where have you been?

Prayers for the sick, our team, our nation, Ukraine and Israel.

Does anybody know of a good deer repellent?

1. Putrefied egg solids and/or soured milk + water. It’s pretty stinky though.

2. Peppermint extract + water.

We have used both and both seem to work in terms of keeping them from eating things we don’t want them to eat … until it rains.

I added Cayenne powder to No. 1 above to give it an extra kick … so that if they got past the scent and decided to have a nibble anyways they might not care for the taste.

Unfortunately I think adding the Cayenne powder created an issue with the sprayer clogging.

I still have about a gallon out in the garage that should be good and stinky by now (over a year old) and I need to pour off the top juice leaving the Cayenne powder in the bottom of the jug.

On No. 2 we tried that this year and it seemed to be working … and then we had several days of near constant rain. Before I could get back out there and respray the deer came through and clipped most of the Sunny Boy tomatoes.

Apparently they don’t care whether it’s raining or not if they are hungry.

That was before I had the monofilament fence up though.

After they clipped the plants we caged the Sunny Boys’ and got the monofilament fence up and have had no further predation on them. They seemed to have recovered quite well.

We caged the Bush Beefsteak’s as they were planted and they were never touched … other than squirrels digging at their bases to try and bury food for later.

We used 2” x 3” welded wire 2’ tall for the cages because that was what we had and it was free. (Chicken wire/poultry netting would have worked too … and kept the squirrels from digging at the bases of the plants)

If I was buying materials for protective cages I’d probably go taller.

The largest Sunny Boy had outgrown that … so we pulled the welded wire cage and put a normal 54” tall tomato support cage around it several days ago and have had no issues … so this evening we pulled the welded wire cages on the rest of the Sunny Boys and put regular tomato cages on them.

Probably won’t do that on the Bush Beefsteaks as they are only supposed to get 2’ tall.

You have to really diligent about respraying as soon as you can though after the rain stops.

Woman sprayed with peppermint extract + water a few days ago, resprayed everything again tonight after we finished putting the normal cages on.

If not I may have to utilize wire cages.

They’ve worked well here.

Coffee is done brewing. 52° with mostly cloudy skies this morning. Heading to 72° with mix of sun and clouds. .13" of rain overnight. Got cement put down for front barn door yesterday. Cleaned up tools and put the away when dry. Rest of the day was spent relaxing on porch. No plans for today except watch some NASCAR in afternoon.
