I was wondering when the lack of peace and quiet would become evident. I'm sure it's quite different there than your old place, but shopping convenience is a partial trade off I guess.
I was concerned about the noise from the airport enough that I checked into what flew out of there before purchasing the Orcutt home. At the time, I could find no passenger flights normally scheduled in and out of the Santa Maria field. Since then, regular commercial service has started. The biggest surprise, though, is that military jets, and especially that ungainly VTOL cargo plane the Marines use, make regular training runs and stop'n'go landings, and their flight paths are close enough that I can see the pilots in some of the planes. They also fly firefighter tankers out of that airport. Fortunately, the all the flights pretty much stick to daylight hours. I wonder at the logic of using that airport for military purposes, especially considering the miserable safety record of that VTOL aircraft.
Up north, the Camp Fire of 2018 took out most of the trees that used to shield my property from traffic and train noise, so it's not nearly as quiet there as it used to be. Very much a case of paradise lost, no pun intended. I moved there from Dublin, CA, which is at the intersection of I580 and I680, which was much noisier than anyplace I've lived. I'd say the new place is maybe midway between Dublin and Butte County noise wise. The biggest change is that the master bedroom of the new house is only about thirty-five feet from the street, and I get traffic noise like I've never had before. It's residential, but a heck of a change from having a quarter mile driveway like up north.
Another advantage of the new place, besides being a short walk from shopping, is it's also a short way to a good hospital. Up north, super expensive life-flights on helicopters are the normal mode of emergency medical transport.
