Frits, did your kids grow up learning a second language?
My Mom was French/Polish and grew up speaking English and French as there was a significant French speaking population, but no Polish. Sadly, we only grew up with English, I guess as my Dad came from an only English speaking (Irish) family. I consider my own upbringing as lacking in that regard and have never been successful with other languages. Tried Vietnamese and German even with classes. Seems most of the locals I dealt with preferred to practice their English at the time.

Sadly we did not teach our kids a second language except with the first one for a while. When we got more kids it became harder to do and it stopped. We used the danish language to talk among us parents when we wanted to keep the kids out of the conversation or switch to German if they caught on. We sent some of the kids to Denmark for a few months to be with family but they did not learn much because everyone wanted to practice English. I learned some Polish doing startup of a Potato/glucose factory and some Hungarian being the construction supervisor for about a year. When I think back on the many things I have been involved in over the years it is such a varied bunch of assignments and experiences that many don't get working as a mechanical engineer for an employer. When a project completes after a year or two depending on the scope of work there was always another new assignment waiting. And it ranged from Nuclear power, coal or oil fired power, combustion turbine power, waste and air pollution, desalination projects, water treatment projects, manager of O&M contracts for a series of repowering projects, Manager of insurance recovery and warranty. One project at Doswell Virginia almost killed one of my employees due to a broken turbine blade that blew up the 100mw turbine. One of the blades penetrated a 2 inch steel beam. Cost millions in repairs but mostly made whole by various recovery programs including insurance

That's so true.
I grew up sovjet era, so russian at school was a must. Then in college studied English, went 2 runs in practice in Germany, learned little German there. Because of work learn little bit of Italian. But I am too lazy for that and with Italians speak English

My oldest daughters went to French lyceum, so they had to study French 1 hour every day. Then for optional language they choose German and they are rather good with that. For sure they speak better than me. But they almost dont speak russian. Dont care. Some says could be nice to keep that russian vibe as we have common border with them and here like 20 - 30 % minority are russians. But in today's light care even less



That phenomena in my picture completely corresponds definition. It's not snow neither ice.
But I haven't heard that word in casual discussions, so I started to doubt.


I have read shat in some of NA natives (mby Inuit) language there are more than 50 words for "snow". We have like wet, packed, powder, fresh.

That is right. On Greenland that is what they have. Although is all melting now due to warming

I think I lost a credit card and backtracking has not turned it up. The last thing I used it for was in the drive through lane for Starbucks in Hagerstown on our drive earlier today. Called in and stopped new charges for now. Will replace if we don't find it. Other than that nice drive to Greencastle PA today

Good (Monday) morning. Overnight Low was 7C and it's presently 19.5C, partly cloudy with a slight breeze and no rain in the forecast. Summer just might be poking it's nose around the corner.

Today my Aunt & I will head into town to do some grocery shopping, plus I've received a notice for a parcel pick-up at the PO. The grocery shopping is because she's been through my pantry and freezer; tossing out all of the 'expired' items that have accumulated over time. Heck, when you live alone, you get into a routine (meal wise) and so forget what's still there.

There's a few projects that I can get to over this week as I've been waiting to have a 'safety number' around (mostly ladder work) before I accomplish them.

Good evening! 23 now, high was 25, low this morning was 22. We got a light snow last night. Just enough to turn things white.

Little worried about the forecast. We are planning to leave early Saturday to go see family in MD for Christmas. Weather forecast is concerning.

Replaced the float valve and flapper in the downstairs toilet today. It was time. Actually went fairly easy. Unusual for a plumbing project for me.

I have always felt not being able to speak another language besides American English was a failing for me. Especially when I became International Product Support Manager. But in construction equipment and steel mills, English is the language of the business. but oddly, I did learn a couple of languages. I had German in school, and could function in Germany after listening for a bit. I picked up some French, Spanish, and Italian as well. I became able to follow and hold a conversation in Greek. The Greeks use English technical terms. I picked up Greek be listening to what was said before/after the technical term. I taught myself to read Greek. But once I would leave a country, I couldn’t speak the language again until I listened to native speakers. Never could pick up any Finnish and only a few words in Turkish.

A normal Sunday.
Worship went well this morning. I was song leader. Ate lunch up on the mountain, go thru this tunnel under the railroad.

Stopped by orchard and picked up cider. Never got any all fall. But we skipped on the pies. Cherry pie now $18 up from $12. Just not paying that much.
Nice nap this afternoon.
Went back to church early for elders meeting and now home from evening service.
Slim Pickens for food. Had just a dab of leftover chili, used all the bread to make tomorrow’s lunch, eating some chips, the crumbs at the bottom of the bag.
Put gas in the new car for first time, it’s only been driven to church on sundays
