Didn't get to any walks with the trimmer today. First changed out some drippers for more flow. Then got involved hand pulling some weeds hiding in the beds.

It heated up real fast, 88° at 10:30, went up to 92° and I was feeling it. So figured I'd just tackle the recoil on the trimmer. WHAT A PIA THAT WAS!

The engineer that designed how these are assembled should be made to disassemble one of these. Had to take off 3 different covers (one of which gets screwed to the recoil). The recoil itself has 4 machine screws holding it on .... Why not just have that service item be removable by itself? Too easy!
--- We need to make it a real pain to remove so people will just throw it away and buy another!

Somehow, the recoil rope got under the pulley, wrapped around the center post that the pulley turns on. Of course, that pulley is permanently mounted onto the post molded into the housing. I had to come in and google if it, in fact, could be disassembled..... nope! --- Replace the whole assembly as a unit.

So, stubborn as I am, broke out the picks, pliers, and pokers.... pulled, twisted, turned, pulled some more.... walked away and checked the tractor fluids. Went back to it and fought some more.... Then, with the last pull, it released! WOOHOO!
Lubed it all up, cleaned any gunk under those covers, and reassembled it.

Then I found one little plastic deflector plate that goes in the recoil housing.... apparently, I knocked it off the bench with all my struggling with the recoil. Took it all apart again... put in the plate, reassembled again... I can do it in under 10 minutes now.....

At this point it was still 92°, but with no breeze, so feeling much hotter. Decided to close up the shop and went into the A/C. Wifey made the blueberry turnovers again.....

Time for relaxation and desert.

66F and clear @ 23:00, heading down to a low of 59F in the overnight. High temp hit 86.2F, with the breeze it was quite pleasant.

But no spraying done.

Did get the weeds along the electric fence mostly knocked down with the string trimmer.

Hopper feeder refilled.

Replaced bag on Japanese Beetle trap which was full:

Found out the putrified repellent juice works good for trapping mice - found a floater this afternoon ... which I removed and then covered the bucket the juice is in.

Got one 4' tall chickenwire cage put together and taken around back.

Mowing done down around the house, except for a very small area at the northeast corner which I'll get tomorrow.

Took dump cart up and got a little less than a half cart load of screened compost and filled in the far end of the garden bed.

Made the run to Menards and picked up order after straightening out the number of bags of mulch I was still owed on that previous order. Came home with 40 bags, having that on the tail made the van ride a lot nicer ... ;)

Stopped and got 4 gallons of gas for the Cub at the cheap station while I was down there, $4.299/gallon which is the cheapest I've seen it in a while and 10 cents cheaper than the station down at the corner. Grabbed a "hunk" (two slices) of Hunt Bros Pizza there as well, which hit the spot on the way back to the house.

Replaced fittings on the Water Buffalo and installed new hose, should be a little less unwieldy:

Got new 4' tall cage installed on the largest tomato plant out in the garden area.

That freed up the short cage so I planted the last remaining (large) bell pepper plant and caged it.

Picked the first produce of the season from the garden:

Zucchini ... what else ? ...

Orienpet Lily "Pretty Woman" blooms:

Fragrance on those is strong enough that you can smell them from 8' - 10' away.

New Dahlia bloom "Polka":

New Day Lily blooms "Bonanza:

Woman scored a new plant yesterday - "Blue Razor" Ornamental Grass - for which She has an idea to incorporate into a planting:

IMG_1842 copy.jpg

Moved 4 largest tomato plants in front around to the back, there's 6 back there now in pots waiting to get planted. Thinking real hard about a greenhouse for next year.

Refilled a 5 gallon bucket with some potting mix which emptied the tote before moving plants into the garage and closing up.

Sounds like The Portage Lakes just had their 4th of July fireworks show.

May pot some more bare root strawberries after I have a little snack.

Hope everyone had a great Saturday ... (y)

Good mid (Sunday) arvo. Another mild overnight Low of 7C, no wind and there was 2.5mm of rain in the gauge from yesterday's intermittent showers. The High was 12C and overcast with no predicted rain.

I did get the 'new' paddocks set up for the horse transfer in between the showers, basically had to set up the water trough and put a round of hay out on it's end. Tractor fun! The owner and her daughter were a bit delayed so were appreciative that everything was ready to go. I'll wait a day or two to chain-harrow the used paddocks.

Church this morning... I read 1Peter5: 1-14. Put me in mind for being humble and gladly helping those in need; like travelling into town to open the furniture shed, and helping to deliver the pieces if required. I'm a fortunate man.

Quiet rest of the day. Take care all.

Need to give the trimmer a little exercise today, but other than that nothing much planned, just take it as it comes.
