Good morning!!!!

Good morning to all! Low was 24°, going up to 50°, sunny and breezy. Hopefully the snow will melt off.
And use less fuel. My understanding is the improvement in fuel economy far outweighs the cost of DEF. And we have less nasties going into the atmosphere.
Drew, I will briefly state that the diesel emission filters do not increase milage at all. Our fleet of ambulances about 10 years ago had the 7.3L Powerstroke diesels w/o any emission filters of use of DEF fluid. We could take a truck with a full tank (38 gals) out for a 13 hour shift and have at least 1/2 to 3/4 of a tank left at the end of shift.
Then the fleet was slowly replaced by new trucks with the 6.7L diesel with all the emissions crap..... we would have to refuel about 3/4 (8-10 hours) into the shift. Same trucks, same size fuel tank, just different engine. The fuel costs increased over $100,000 the first year.
They ended up replacing the next batch of trucks with gas powered ones (Ford V-10's). By the time half the fleet got replaced, they were saving over $5K a month in fuel costs.
In addition, when the trucks hit around 75K miles, most of the DPF canisters had to be replaced, at a cost of $15K. The mechanics could replace the entire gas engines for a cost of around $10K...... It's no wonder they switched to gas. Last I heard, they were getting about 150K miles out the gas engines (of couse used and abused hard) running them almost 24 hour / day.

Sorry for the long post....

sounds like they should have stayed at Tier III.
I've had two Tier 2 Masseys and my Kubota was Tier 4 interim.
Wish I had that Kubota back.........
Larger Massey had DEF tank. Didn't use much but then I didn't put a ton of hours on it either.
2 1/2 gallon jugs can get unwieldy.

this pic showed me trying to put back a heavy duty auger with an 18 inch bit on it, no way I could horse that around by
myself and many of you know how challenging it is to stand one of these up, even on a stand.
My other challenge was I needed to keep it right inside the open shed and the tractor didn't fit in there.
Lot of fiddling and it got in

Need to run some errands this morning, including taking back a full 40# propane tank. It was brand new a month ago, refilled the first time last week. Well the monkey that filled it must have over torqued the valve and stripped the valve handle..... not too usable if you can't open the valve!

Then off to the grocery store.... then the post office.....

Heard this on the radio this morning....

....somebody isn't going to be happy..... I wonder what the total cost will be paid out by insurance? That's gonna be costly for sure....

everyone have a great day!

Dftodd, what tales you could tell about customers wrecking your expensive equipment in creative ways.

I don't understand why they can't put the DEF in the diesel fuel and stop all this nonsense. I know the chemistry doesn't work that way, being a sort
of afterburner process but makes you wonder if they can't improve on ol' #2 fuel oil. Now it's ultralow most bad stuff but wonder if you dumped a gallon of DEF
in your diesel tank, how that would run. Don't try this at home....

And since it's urea/uric acid, sort of, I know there are some hillbillies trying to pee in their DEF tank.
Something tells me it wouldn't lubricate too well vs petroleum
It's an unfortunate solution to emissions.

But I have read many times how properly maintained modern engines run a lot smoother and start a lot easier than
Tier 1's and 2's. And use less fuel. My understanding is the improvement in fuel economy far outweighs the cost of DEF. And we have less nasties going into the atmosphere.
Bill and Buppies and others who run heavy trucks, have you seen a mpg improvement over the years? Of course then we get gouged for fuel because of international manipulation and
that extra 1mpg doesn't mean much when fuel went up a dollar a gallon. I'd think when fuel prices are highest that mpg would get really important to bottom line.
DEF is all about clean air. Just wish technology would advance to make it unecessary but I guess we are just waiting for electric everything to come.

You rarely see black smoke coming out of a big truck anymore, particularly fleet trucks. If you want black smoke go to a tractor pull.
My 'old' 2001 Freightliner with a C 15 Cat 475 hp turned upp to 500 got 4.5 miles to the Imperial gallon/ 5.4 miles to the US gallon pulling 139,000 lbs.
My 2018 International with a Cummins ISX 550 hp, gets exactly the same as the cat hauling the same loads on the same roads, the only difference is that now I have to put the cow pee in it.

Just a word on the HF assortment, I bought a huge O-ring assortment from them and I have yet to find one that fits anything and they break with very little effort. Now that has no bearing on how good the set screws might be. Just a word of caution on the O-rings.
I've had the same experience with the o-rings...bought both metric and SAE...I'm sure they fit lots of things, but my luck has been bad with them.

19F and cloudy @ 12:30, headed up to a high of 28F for the day. Good amount of rain yesterday ... but I don't think it was anywhere near what they were calling for. Significant melting but ground still mostly snow covered. Ten Day forecast revised to cooler temps, only two days with highs above 50F in the forecast at this point.

Refilled hopper and two sunflower tube feeders, also three suet feeders the other day. Deer corn feeder got six scoops + plus two scoops of cracked corn for the birds around their feeders.

Deer got rather inventive when their feeder was empty - they are licking the sunflower seeds out of the tube feeder with their tongues:

Told Woman I was going to make her a sheet cake as a present for Valentines Day. She just kind of snorted and said She thought that it sounded like it was my present. So I asked her if She was going to get up then and make it ... "NO !" was the reply ... :giggle:

As of late last night it was all gone.

Also ordered her a new Melitta carafe and drip cone from Amazon, along with a nice little set of stainless measuring spoons.

Smart t-stat installed and working after some initial issues but still not completely set up. There were only four wires connected to the old 'stat, new stat needed a "common" wire to power it which the old 'stat didn't require. Fortunately, there was a spare wire wrapped around the others in the wall. Unfortunately, it was cut in the basement short of the furnace. So I jumpered it with a lengthy of wire I had laying around and connected it to the common terminal on circuit board that supplies the AC. The existing wires were spliced at at least one point so will probably just go ahead at some point and pull new wires all the way back to the furnace.

Agenda for today will include seeing if I can get the setup on t-stat finished, refilling the feeders, and transcribing some documents.

Only 29 more days until the first day of Spring ...

Hope everyone is having an enjoyable, productive, and safe Friday ... (y)

Billy,

My experience is that most anything that comes from HF that is rubber is junk.

So tend to avoid stuff that includes rubber ... unless it's clear that I can easily fabricate a replacement.

On the old microwave: Yeah ... it had a fairly good run ... ;)

Dang,

I was just informed my Porsche delivery is going to be delayed.

I never fully recovered from having to wait on my tractors arm rests.

I am beside myself. :(
