Crazy weather! Ten days ago the temperature was in low 120 range. Today the forecast is 84!

0900, light rain right now, had two pretty good thundershowers already this morning. 73 with 94% humidity. Forecast high is 90 with 60% chance of rain. I woke at 0600 to the sound of my handyman rubbing down the front porch steps. Just a little bit of dirt at each end, and this job will be over. What with the rain, a three day job has taken three weeks.

The rain and sun had started to mess with one of the banana cantaloupe, so I picked it. It could have been a hair riper, but still very good. I ate about half of it for breakfast.

Larry, my spoon can almost reach one...
I've never seen a banana version, thanks for sharing.
No, I mean really sharing. Send us all a bite!

just got back from the surgeon's. For the first time in my life, a doc
was early for an appt. Traffic was lighter than I thought,
and I got there an hour early. I joked with the receptionist if she could call the doc and see if he could
come out early, just as a joke. All the ladies laughed. And one had fun with it and actually called the doc.
And sure enough, twenty five minutes early, this surgeon shows up with a smile and joked "now you know I can't always do this" and
and I sure was impressed. He was done rounds, in his office, and why not see me. Plus I was an easy one, thank goodness, off comes the hard collar
and I drove home without it. And my neck still hurts, to which I was told, give it a couple of months to fully heal, no heavy lifting, etc.
I was a happy camper getting out of that office, and got home by shortly after ten am. Likely never again, but hopefully a good omen for my neck.

thanks for all the well wishes, not going to be splitting wood anytime soon but maybe if I just run the lever...:D

I think rain is coming in tonight, but one can never tell. Until i see it on the radar about ten miles out, the yammering weatherman is
just noise; he or she really doesn't know if rain is going to come over my particular property. Sure, in a big storm but so many of these weather events
we get seem to be sporadic. A real douser went by us last night, ten miles south. Nothing here. And the peppers need watering...

since I'm dressed nicely I think I'll take my wife to lunch.
the lawn will be there when I come back.

Drew, good news!

I know about the rain and we could actually use a bit right now for the grass. Ground water is fine but the top few inches are getting dried out. within 25 miles yesterday there was over 4" in three hours. We got a shower last night but not too much.

Daugen, glad to hear about the good news. Enjoy the meal with your wife. Because of our different schedules, my wife and I don't get the chance to eat out very often. It is always a treat when we do.

If you stop by the house, I'll gladly share the melon with you. But you had better hurry. The vines don't look like they are going to last much longer. I planted too late. But I didn't even know the wife had the seeds until she ask me to plant them. Next year I will have a bigger patch of them.

Ok guys and gals, here's an easy one. Are the red peppers cayenne? We have tons of these things coming in, as stated before, really hadn't planned on them, and I'm smart enough with my acid reflux that these babies are going to find a new home.
My concern over hot peppers is when to pick them. These were easy, they got flaming red. Pretty cute actually, look like xmas ornaments...;)

I'm late getting to this, but yes, daugen, those peppers are Cayenne. They are good even green, when they get to that size.

Drew: Quick! By a lottery ticket. The odds of a doctor being early are not nearly as good as winning the lottery. I think you're a shoo-in to win.;) Congrats on the good news. For once, the news matches your attitude.:)

Larro: That melon was ripe to the rind on one side. Can you compare the flavor to something to give us a clue how it tastes? I cut and sliced my big Israel melon this morning and it wouldn't fit in a single gallon size bag. I had to use two bags to hold it all. I had some for lunch; tastes like honey with a crunch.:D

thanks. do they get hotter the longer they stay on the vine? They sure are pretty in the xmas green and red; do they turn other colors? Just never raised these things, don't have the visual
clues for when they are fully baked. I'd hate to ruin them by picking them too early. More pics of others coming soon...I really have no idea what's growing in there. But at least the yellow bell peppers are now
turning a consistent orange, so I guess we got some orange sweet pepper plants.

I sprayed all the plants again with some organic bug/fungicide spray and hopefully that will prevent what happened last year, when we lost all the melons to bugs.
We didn't get one stinking melon last year, so this year we have what we can find staked out with little red flags so we can check on them. I stuck straw under one, something to get it off the dirt.
Wonder if I should cut little pieces of cardboard to put under them.
