well, I just got back from the garden too, didn't find a melon as impressive as Jim's, but we have some that at least are growing.
By the time I got done hand shoveling one row of potatoes, while my wife plucked them out, her favorite job, I was drenched to my underwear, and
downright dizzy. It wasn't crazy hot either, maybe I just needed to drink more water. I looked at my wife and said honey I'm done, and she was too.
We picked an entire bucket of russet potatoes, which for whatever reason are coming out with a very rough skin. Maybe that's normal and the supermarket stuff is cleaned up in a potato cleaner/buffer, but ours have really thick skins. Fine with me, makes them taste better when they get a little crunchy.
Ok guys and gals, here's an easy one. Are the red peppers cayenne? We have tons of these things coming in, as stated before, really hadn't planned on them, and I'm smart enough with my acid reflux that these babies are going to find a new home.
My concern over hot peppers is when to pick them. These were easy, they got flaming red. Pretty cute actually, look like xmas ornaments...
the big red bucket had been full of red potatoes and our favorites, the purple ones. Boy are they interesting looking in potato salad. But we are giving them away as fast as the neighbors can take them. At least potatoes have shelf life, unlike the tomatoes, squash, etc. which tend to overwhelm all of us.
So I figure next week another hundred pounds of potatoes, and that part of the garden will be done.
I just had some home made potato salad for lunch and boy was it good. Even chopped up a little of our own celery in it, which while frankly tough and strong tasting, was really quite good if chopped up and blended in. We cut the last of the celery today and the suburban was filled with the smell of the celery foliage, it's really almost like an herb. Which is why the green stuff will partly go in some chicken/turkey soup.
I'm guessing it's the past heavy rains, but most of our cucumbers were a bust. They got round and fat, not elongated like they are supposed to, and turn yellow quickly, and mushy. Well, it's plenty hot and dry out now, so we'll see how they do from now on. At least we did put some little ones away for the MIL to make pickles with.
and that is the crop report for today. Have a nice Sunday. Drew
