Step one would be to determine what the rod hanger end should be. Single or dual ears?

I take some good pics next time I'm there.

However the Ebay site says 7 of 8 have been sold and it does not say which one is left. ???

I'm beginning to think the handle was wood or it would still be on the pump.

See if you can find any manufacturer info on the pump casting Don. We've got two hand pumps .. small one is what's called a "pitcher pump". I'll get some detail pictures of the larger pump tomorrow. Might help you and Mr. Riptides find your handles. I don't recall ever seeing one with a wood handle?

Contact the eBay seller and see if they might send a picture of the remaining handle .. then you two guys can start a bidding war over it.

My grandfathers pump, looks like it broke and was cobbled together.
I put a submersible pump in dads well back in late 90s. Not sure where the hand pump is.

You guys sure can provoke some memories!

I have very vague memories of parents renting a house with an outhouse. I was quite young, preschool, 2 brothers. Not sure if a water problem of what but I do recall getting in trouble once for using the indoor bathroom when I wasn’t supposed to. This house was like in the middle of nowhere in Cape Neddick Maine. I remember many years later looking for and finding it - still in middle of nowhere.

Both sets of grandparents, also in Maine had outhouses when I was a kid, actually they each had 2 that I recall.

My maternal grandmother had one in a building that was a combination garage, toolshed, henhouse. Not too far from the house. That got replaced by a separate structure further out in the field. I think that one was more for us kids as by then there was an in house toilet and I have no memories of see my grandmother use it. Sears catalog anyone?

Paternal grandparents had one in what was called the barn, more of a 2 story oversized garage with a wooden floor. I was still quite young when that one was replaced by a single holer just off the back porch. I’m guessing when that one closed was when they must have gotten running water. Up until then it was a hand pump in kitchen at a cast iron sink that was at least 3 ft long but maybe only 6 inches deep. I’m willing to bet that all of us grandkids (17) were bathed in that sink as there was never a bathtub even after the inhouse toilet was installed. Wasn’t until years after my granddad passed that a shower was installed.

Wood & Kerosine - even more memories. Another time.

From 1953 until 1966 we (Ma & Pa and me) lived 21 miles east of Toronto, not really out in the boonies but real close to that. 1/3 acre lots in a new subdivision. The road we lived on was 1 mile long gravel. Every spring there was a huge frost heave at the south end near the highway.
We had a pitcher pump on the side of the kitchen sink, with a tap set already mounted. Friends came from the city and wanted some good well water to drink and would turn on the tap looking for water. Fat chance of that happening, there were no pipes going to the taps.

Our first pressure system mainly for flushing the toilet was a 45 gallon barrel in the attic directly over the toilet, the water pump was a piston pump and it sucked the water out of the well and pushed it up to the barrel in the attic. He had a float on a micro-switch to control the pump. Eventually we got the plumbing hooked up, but the only way we heated water for baths (no shower) was at first to draw the water and heat it on the stove. Later Dad found a 'Quebec heater'. Just a little pot bellied stove with water jacket in it, you started it on wood and switched over to coal. It got the water hot.

We had a coal furnace for heat from 1953 until 1960, Dad switched over to natural gas and the gas company took the old coal furnace out and installed the new gas furnace and hooked it up to our ducting. I think if I remember right, the rental on the furnace was about $2.oo/month. The gas company also supplied and installed a gas water heater. We moved out of there in 1966 and google earth tells me that the house is gone and new buildings are in place.
