54 going to 70 and cloudy.

Was delightful in the woods yesterday.

'Stros making a comeback?

Hope everyone is in better health today, or at least in good spirit.

I do feel better about the 'Stros chances now. They did what they had to do. Hopefully the bats don't go to sleep.

Don, saw in your raised bed pic a mattock laying on the ground. That is one of my favourite tools, yet I very rarely see anyone else using one.

Before the rain started I made a start on a new curved flower bed for my wife. She had laid a hose pipe out to mark the edge and once I cut the line vertically, the mattock was perfect for cutting out the turf.

Earlier this year we had visited a garden where the lawn edge was kept neat and easy to trim with an edging strip of mild steel and my wife asked if I could do the same. Two bits of scrap wood proved useful at getting the soil level at 4" below the grass. I welded a couple of pieces of flat bar to the ends of each 4 metre steel strip so they could be slotted together, then once my wife was happy with it, I welded them all up permanently.

I had a very old, heavy mattock (grubbing hoe). Loaned it to a neighbor, who somehow "lost" it, and he replaced it with some featherlite version. He probably thought I would be happy....the light one doesn't work very well.

Eric, around here, they place the border about 50-75mm above ground level, to help keep grass from creeping over and re-establishing itself.

^^^^^ I really enjoy visiting those small beaver ponds and observing the wildlife that they support.

Kyle- I am sorry to read about your "lost" mattock. Your replacement reads to be like a heavy hoe = worthless for breaking sod.

I can see the points of both sides of the 30 Meter Telescope project and protests. What I find most offensive is how some individuals exploit the issues. There is no easy decision.

Paul has not checked in recently. I hope that he is ok.

Was your old hoe like anything on this page?

I have a tiny gardening hoe that is pretty much useless for the stony soil around here. I'm thinking one of those 7" hoes at the top of that page would be just the ticket, but worry that the handle would be too short.

Kyle_in_Tex;5566677 I had a very old said:
Meanwhile the neighbor is using the much better mattock. Lol

I've seen steel strips used like that in commercial landscapes, Eric. They have to work better than the thick, 5/8" x 3 1/2" plastic edging I used around here. Every single piece of that junk warped and worked its way out of the ground, and in the fire, the top edges melted bending it even more. I'd planted a couple hundred feet of the wretched stuff, and dug and pulled it all back up, forming a pile of it on the gravel pad where the shipping container is going. Last week, I spent a delightful afternoon, first removing the screws that held the wooden stakes onto the sides of the stuff, then using a saber saw to cut it into garbage can sized lengths for disposal. In many places, the melted plastic had covered up the screw heads, so I made do by breaking the pointed ends of the screws off with a pair of vise grips. Glad that job's done, but what a massive waste of time and money installing it in the first place.
