Glow Plugs

A salesman told me to put a hairdryer on the air intake on my vermeer with deutz. I think you could probably run a duct from the heat vents in your jeep to the air cleaner. It only takes warmer intake air to get the combustion going.

Rip,

Thanks for the reply. I have not even investigated as to whether or not Deutz did offer something. I have not had the time. I appreciate the information and am going to contact my Deutz mechanic tomorrow. I will keep everyone informed on what I find out or results that I get. As I said above, the machine will be sitting on parking lots with no power nearby to heat the portable magnetic heaters, which I would not know where to locate on a 2445. Either way, time is money and I do not have time to put a heater on the tractor for an hour or so when I have many other accounts to get to. This is the response that I was hoping for. Thanks! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Speaking of ether...

when I worked at the airpoort we had several pieces of diesel equipment and they had ether injection. When they broke, we just started using a 1 second shot of starter fluid into the air intake. Is there some inherent problem with using ether on diesels and why don't more people do it? I use it in my old pull start Simplicity for the last decade and it still runs like a champ, but it is a gas engine. Any thoughts?

Ed,

I guess we were both responding to Bill at about the same time. Have you installed the intake air heater on any of your machines? How well does it work?

Thanks, Rip

Mossroad,

Ether certainly still does work as a starting aid, but NOT in conjuction with either intake air heaters or internal glow plugs! The other main reason it has fallen out of favor is it is too easily abused and can then lead to serious engine damage.

For too many people a 1 second shot becomes a 5 second blast or a series of shots in quick succession and then a blown engine.

Reminds me of the time a buddy used ether on his pickup and dented the hood when the valve cover blew off /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Too much ya think?

Just updating this thread. I have just gotten off of the phone with my local Deutz distributor and will be picking up the intake manifold heater for my 2445 on Monday of next week. He quoted me $85.00 for the heating element itself (which he refers to as a glow plug), a push button switch for the dash, and a washer for the glow plug port. He told me it is easy to install, just run a fused line from a power source to the switch and down to the element. All that has to be done is that prior to cranking the engine, hold down the button for up to 30 seconds if it is 0 degrees, above zero the time to hold the button decreases, and crank the engine. After a few times, he says you will get the timing down. FYI: On all 1011f model engines, there is a provision already built in for this, two ports on all 4 cylinder engines and 1 port in all 2 and 3 cylinder engines. He says most with four cylinder only use one element anyway.

The other option is a heater that goes on the pan, but he did not feel like this is a very safe route as there is no thermostat.

Happy Holidays!
Bill
