Glow plug

I got my 2210 last January off ebay, and it has worked out just fine. I was surprised, though, to discover there is not a glow plug for starting. Does it start just by compression? How will this arrangement work out next winter when temps can get well below zero? I've used a block heater in the past with other brands of tractors, but they all had glow plugs. Is the lack of a glow plug on the 2210 anything to be concerned about? Thanks. . . .

Your 2210 does indeed have 3 glowplugs! But unlike what you are probably used to, they do not have a separate switch, or light on the dash to tell you when they are on.

The glowplugs are energized when the key is in the start position, while the starter is cranking. Some engineer at JD thought this was a good idea

My 4110, 4010, 2210, 4115 are all the same, and probably more that I cannot think of...

To make starting easier in cold weather, I either pull up the PTO button, or leave the tranny in gear and turn the key to start for 5-10 seconds, then put in neutral or push the PTO switch in. That gives the glowplugs a chance to heat up without the starter cranking.

Kennyd is right: The tractors I've had in the past (no names, but they were all bright orange!) had a separate switch for the glow plug and a light on the dash to tell when they were on. With no switch and no light on the 2210, I just figured there was no plug. The things that can be learned on this web site due to the willingness of others to share information are pretty incredible. Thanks!

Hi:

You can tell when the glow plugs are on by watching the indicator lights on the dash. When you first put the ignition on they will be dim for maybe 3-5 seconds (while the glow plugs are on) then you'll hear a relay click and they will brighten up. That's when they kick off.

The suggestions already mentioned Pull up the PTO knob or leave it in gear and turn to the start position) will allow you to warm them up longer than the factory preset before cranking it.

I've found it starts pretty easy in cold weather. The 3000 series (90 series also) don't have glow plugs and use an electric air pre-heater which works great in cold weather.

And here it is, almost four years after the introduction of the 2210 and this style of glow-plug, and Deere still hasn't put it in the owners manuals. Go figure.

The 4115 didnt have them - its direct injection so its not needed. Same with the new 2520

Yup, you are correct, I forgot about the DI engines. But the rest of the info is still correct.

I follow kennyd's procedure on my 4010, which also does not have any instructions for use of the glow plugs. I just hold in start position for 4 seconds in the winter and 1 to 2 seconds in other seasons before moving the range lever to "N". Always starts instantly, about 1/2 turn of the crankshaft, same as our 24 year old Benz with over 200,000 miles on it (but it has both a glow plug light and temperature sensor).

The glow plugs will actually turn on between "on" and "start" position. You can detect this by putting a continuity tester light at ground and on one of the glow plugs. If JD only had a glow plug light on the dash board, one could easily detect this position and just hold the key there.
