When you have a person in the position of "TEACHER" or someone else employed by the State, County, City or School District standing in front of a group of students or others and leading the group in prayer, you have State Sponsored Religion.

If someone is arguing the other side, I have missed it.

No, you have an American citizen exercising their constitutional rights. Where did you go to school? I went to school in NC in the 50's, 60's and early 1970. I never, ever heard of anyone being forced to lead a prayer in school with threat of punishment, unless maybe it was a religious school. We had morning prayer, Pledge of Allegiance and even sang the National Anthem sometimes. In elementary school there were no non Christians but in Jr High and high school it was made clear that anyone not wishing to participate could go to the library until first period started. We had a few Jewish kids and one Muslim in my classes, there were others in the school. Out of them all, I think I remember 2-3 over the course of the year going to library and David said it was so he could do his homework he didn't do the night before. They all had a thing called 'common sense', they understood that being exposed to another religion was a learning thing and in no way corrupted their beliefs. By the way, they were offered the chance to perform their own prayers, meditations, whatever. A few did and we sat with them and none of us was offended or converted. We all found it interesting.
What you really want isn't freedom, it's to remove religion from everyone. Good luck!

When you have a teacher, employed by and paid by a governmental entity standing in front of a class room of students who are required by law to be there and articulating a partisan Christian prayer I think that is what the Supreme Court ruled as unconstitutional and not freedom of speech.

I am glad you were able to attend a school where religious discussion was not a school ground slug fest and religious participation was not mandatory.

Bible belts had some interesting school years especially in the nineteen fifties when God was being added to US currency and to the Pledge of Allegiance. A majority of people do not seem to realize that if you went to school in the fifties you said a different Pledge of Allegiance than schoold children say today. Money spent by school children in the fifties was also different than that spent today.

I personally think anyone and everyone should pray too and worship whatever God they so choose. I also believe no one has a right, constitutional or otherwise to subject others to their personal religious dogma either orally or in written text.

How about just removing religion from this thread?

I agree one hundred percent.

Might that not just because of more people=more bird feeders=more and different bird survival rates??

The same is mirrored in species breeding here during the summer- that were unheard of 50 years ago. Turkey vulture is ow a regular inhabitant in Maine- @9 years ago There were not any. Towhees are working their way up. It goes on. There are more over wintering robins. Feeders can help a bird survive- but not all birds are seen at feeder areas during the winters. The feeders could not make the difference when 25 years ago -25 below for a week at a time was the norm, or a month where it never went above 0. Cardinals don't survive those temps. The local species do.
I am always impressed by the tree sparrows and snow buntings that head down from further north to winter in our area. Our cold temps are balmy to them.
Likewise- the cool loving local species are shifting north to breed during the summer- or heading into cooler elevations. There has been a major shift in habitat as the climate heats across the country.
Check out growing zones in Gurneys/Henry Fields planting catalogs today- compared to what they were 15 years ago.
Everything has shifted up a zone. Our zone 3-4 has become zone 4-5.

I remember being stuck at my desk in the 6th grade while my teacher recited the lords prayer. I hated it. I hadn't been to church- it was like being stuck in a room full of crazies. I was glad when school prayer was struck down. That was freedom- freedom from listening to the deluded- and being forced to keep your head bowed. Hated every minute of it.

My tax rate is many time the nine percent paid by Mitt. [/QUOTE said:
Mitt paid 15% and that is the law on investment income, He already paid the tax once on it. What would you do pay more then is required? He also donated 4 million dollars to charity.

He donates most of his "charity" deduction to the Mormon church as part of the tithing process, that helps the Mormon Church but I'm not sure it helps any other charitable cause.

Liberals: 展ell, Giving to the Mormon Church Doesn稚 Count as Charitable Giving | RedState

Did a quick Google search he gave 1 million to the mormons and 3 million elsewhere. Where I don't care thats not the point.

where did you get your numbers?

Here is a piece from The Nation: Romney

' Here, via Forbes, is a breakdown of where the Tyler Charitable Foundation has given the more than $7 million it doled out since 2000:

1. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints: $4,781,000
2. Brigham Young University: $525,000
3. The United Way: $177,000
4. Right to Play: $111,500
5. The George W. Bush Library: $100,000
6. Operation Kids: $85,000
7. Center For Treatment of Pediatric MS: $75,000
8. Harvard Business School: $70,000
9. City Year: $65,000
10. Deseret International: $50,000
Weber State University: $50,000

As you can see, the majority of the funding goes to the Mormon church. '

Like I said I did a quick search and this is where I got it from
2011 Taxes: How Much Did Romney Donate To Anti-Gay Mormon Church? | The New Civil Rights Movement

But my point was he gave 4 million to charity That's the point, and you clarified it above Thank You. Looks likeI was wrong he gave much more.
It's his money he can give it to who ever he wants, Who are you to decide which "charity" is OK he gives his money to.

The point was the other poster gave the wrong information to make less of Romney and I was making my point that he really is a good guy. Mormon or not I don't care.
Global warming yes its warming has been for ever. We were under 3 miles of ice at one time in the northeast .

Taxing me and my family making the cost of everything go up is not going to stop it. Most of the people in the world do not have electricity what do they do? Tough luck for them I guess
People all high and mighty get off this Change the climate of the earth bull. We can't even predict the weather next Thursday, and you guys are going to STOP global warming ? change the climate? Time to end this thread. really
The earth has been changing from day one. Mankind will adapt. move on

If I want to pray in school, out loud or otherwise, so long as it's not during class time, that says I can, it doesn't say I have to or that others should, just that I can.

quite true and it has been pointed out repeatedly every time someone mentions praying in school - it is not banned AS LONG AS YOU KNOW YOU CANNOT COOP AN AUDIANCE TO DO IT. That is why organized prayer or other religious trappings are banned in public facilities.

I see you still haven't answered the request. Define what you mean by "curtailing religion".

Why doesn't the teacher and any group of students wishing to do so have the same rights?

I suspect you are aware of hte US Constitution and the various Supreme Court rulings. You don't like it, get the Supremes to change the rulings.
