Religion has terrible record in seeking truth. Not only the church was not seeking truth it used to burn people for saying the obvious truth such as the Earth is round and rotates. If church has the power it had in "dark ages" (it was called dark ages exactly for that for that reason) we would still be made believe that earth is flat and is a center of universe.

This is hardly authoritative, but it is pretty good for the venue.

I most frequently hear "publish or die" in the vicinity of Research Triangle Park, which would be influenced mostly by NCSU, Duke, UNC-CH. I have heard "publish or perish," just less frequently.

But to die or to perish...most folks feel pressure to avoid those two outcomes.

And who is this authority you quote? A novelist. He finished medical school and then switched careers. Never worked in a research lab. Never did anything but write science fiction novels as I recall. Good writer though.

The system he describes does exist in Germany and Russia and probably in some second tier labs but not in the big research universities in the USA. The system is too big and complex for any one or any few individuals to suppress other legitimate research. Rivalry yes, overt suppression not so much. Too many small fish with too much to gain by publishing good science that contradicts the Big Kahunas.

No. I worked with his classmates from medical school who knew him and his career quite well. And why do you think he is qualified to be quoted as a scientist? Did you find any of his papers on Medline? Does understanding enough to write Jurrasic Park qualify you as a paleobiogist?

When DDT was banned commies bought it all for hefty kickbacks in Swiss banks ofcourse. Then poisoned half of the country with it. Lobsters gone, frogs gone, insects gone, birds gone, jack rabbits with tumors, deer with tumors. Then the bugs came back in mass and there were no birds to eat them so they destroyed the crop. It was a total dissaster. It happened in former Czechoslovakia.
Now tell me honestly would you put DDT in your house, on your garden and expose yourself and your children to it. So next time before you make statements like above ask yourself if you would expose yourself to it. If the answer is no or even not sure, say nothing.

Next time you are looking for insect repellent, skip the natural stuff, skip DEET, just rub on some DDT. Maybe you can plumb your shower head to take the DDT. Use a garden hose pesticide sprayer loaded with DDT, Get yourself good and soaked. Oh, and if your kids, grandkids, neighbors come over, soak them down too, ...why not DDT is harmless right?....Good for pregnant women?
