I have decided to go with gear oil in my front axel but not sure if I need to spend the extra money on synthetic oil or not. My feeling is regular 80w 90 gear oil would serve my purpose, please give me reasons that I should not go with that, btw I typically do not use 4wd if that makes any difference. Thanks

I have a grand L 3130 and I changed my fluid to 80-90w I bought at tractor supply. I think mine took 5 quarts or so. Works for me.

I would go with conventional oil, synthetic is like $18 a quart.

I drained the HST oil and put regular dino 80w in. Even if you do not use 4wd much the gears still turn when the tractor moves. I'm a bit old school and just feel better about gear oil. Kubota says either will work. Be sure to drive around a bit and check the level again. The oil needs to get evenly distributed between the left and right side of the axle.

I just did my L3540 and put synthetic in mine. Took less than 4 1/2 quarts.

The polymer chains in synthetic give longer hang time; in a gear bath system there is not much advantage to that since it is always somewhat submerged.

Syns flow and lubricate better at temp extremes; I can have minus 30F in winter and 110 plus in the summer.

I use Mobil 1 syn gear oil in my L5740 front for those reasons, and I decided to use gear oil (instead of transhydo fluid) because I have a non-scientific thought that it might be better for the pressures involved in geared systems.

I am a tractor waxer, so I also use syn oil (Mobil 1), and syn THF (Chevron All Weather THF).
