I love Manhattans, but I use Bulliet Rye. I’ll look for your vermouth recommendation.

What matters is what YOU like.
Personally, I have found the vermouth is irrelevant. All are good to me.
The rye is a personal taste.
I don’t want to imply that my recipes are the best but are what my wife and I like.

I have refined various recipes to my own tastes.

Yeah, my Dad was not a bricklayer, he was a Modular Masonry Clay Unit Installation Technician.
We no longer have garbage men… only sanitation engineers.

I have heard the term polluted substituted for drunk.

I’ve got a closet shelf full of Alcohol received over the years… my guess none of it is palletable?

Bought a home as-is and it also came with racks of old wine… guessing the same?

Same here. To look at it, you would think I drink a lot, but actually, that has all been collected over the years and hardly ever used (except for the Scotch and whiskey, he, he).

By the way, if anyone has any ideas on what mixed drinks can be made with only what you see in the picture, I'm open to suggestions.

Wow, I think there are lots of possibilities. Just buy a drink recipe book.

I also often buy/use Bulliet. I never drink rye neat or on the rocks, so I'm not sure it even matters what rye is used, once it's buried in the overpowering taste of sweet vermouth. :ROFLMAO:

Makers, Wild Turkey, and Jack would go into Old Fashioneds, and the Jameson is good for Banff Cocktail or even Irish Coffee. Gordons is fine in a G&T.

You can also use the bourbons to make Manhattans, just reduce the sweet vermouth, as bourbon is already sweeter than rye. The reason @tradosaurus and I both use rye in our Manhattans is that the bitterness of rye balances nicely against sweet vermouth, versus something like bourbon or even Seagrams, both which can yield a too-sweet Manhattan.

All that cordial/schnapps crap on the lower shelf, I'd just pour down the drain and toss. I like Kahlua in a White Russian as much as the next guy, and the bottle of Gordon's Vodka on the upper shelf would do fine for that. But if the Kahlua has been open many years, given its high sugar content, it might be ready for the garbage.

I actually do like Manhattans with Makers Mark. But god forbid mixing Jamison’s with anything except ice.

Agreed with all that and wanted to include the brandy on the lower right. It's just too sweet.

The Paramount brand isn't as sweet. Paramount Blackberry Brandy is what I like but I don't see it in the pic. It has more thorns than berries.

I have to admit I've never really drank Jamison's. I have a bottle of it received as a gift, that's still sitting unopened after more than 20 years!

I drink mostly bourbon on the rocks or Old Fashioned, highland single-malt Scotches neat or with a dash of water, and rye in Manhattans. But I've never really gotten into blended whiskies, either American or Scotch, so no Seagrams or Jonnie Walker.

You should try the Angel's Envy Rye on the rocks. Incredible.

I had always seen Wild Turkey 101 pop up on articles or bourbon Reddit threads for best budget bourbons, so I finally picked up a bottle recently and I gotta say it is pretty damn good stuff for $25! Same with Old Grand Dad 114. The regular Old Forrester is solid too, but my fave from them is Old Forrester 1920. Packs quite a punch but quite smooth too.

“Yes, vermouth can go bad. While it has a longer shelf life than regular wine due to its higher alcohol content, once opened, it should be refrigerated and is best used within a few months. Unopened, vermouth can last for several years if stored properly at cellar temperature”

I haven’t tested this since I use the hell out of vermouth.

Another personal favorite: Old Fashion

My version for one serving:
Put an Orange slice and a maraschino cherry on bottom of rocks glass.
Use large ice and press down on orange and cherry. Keep ice in glass
Add two shakes of angostura bitters
Add half ounce of sparkling water
Add two ounces of rye or bourbon
Let sit a few minutes to chill.

Enjoy!

The reason I’m not using numbers is that this app is retarded and makes the numbers and emojis into weird symbols.

At the risk of being thrown out of this thread... I admit that I like the cinnamon based bourbons as a desert after dinner sip... The honey based ones are not bad either...

Zipping up my flame-retardant suit!!! ...and sipping on said bourbon!!!

I remember trying one of the Angel's Envy products, way back when they first started appearing at local bars. I remember it being very good, but it was far enough back that I don't even remember which of their products it was.

I've honestly always thought rye was too harsh to drink without adultering it in some way (e.g. Manhattan or Old Fashioned). But maybe I've just been tasting the wrong rye. :ROFLMAO:

So I found a local source for Buffalo Trace bourbon which has been hard to get. I live in a rural area but about twenty miles away is a small town with a liquor store and they always seem to have a shelf full of this bourbon for reasonable price ($38 for one liter)

I have heard that Blantons (over hyped & over priced imo) taste similar to Buffalo Trace.

“No, Buffalo Trace and Blanton's are not the same, though they are related. Buffalo Trace Distillery is the physical distillery where Blanton's bourbon is produced. Blanton's is a brand of single-barrel bourbon whiskey, and it is one of the bourbons made at Buffalo Trace. So, while Buffalo Trace is the distillery, Blanton's is a specific product made”

I usually keep two bottles of bourbon on the shelf, usually Makers or Knob for Old Fashioneds (my most frequent coctail), and something better for drinking on the rocks.

The "something better" usually changes each time I buy, depending on what strikes my fancy. Basil Hayden has been the one I've bought most frequently, the last two or three years, but also 1792 and Jefferson's.

Many, many moons ago a bunch of us rowdy kids were on a long road trip in my old VW bus, when the odometer turned over to all zeros. We stopped, and poured some of our Johnny Walker Red into the tank to celebrate. Much later, I had the carb apart for rebuild, and there were little globules of the Red floating on top of the gas in the fuel bowl. The non-alcohol component of the whiskey I assumed.
