Anyone drink scotch?

Well, the worst two drinks I ever made as a bartender were for two regular but unrelated customers. One was a guy and the other a gal. He drank scotch and milk and she drank scotch and tonic. YETCH!:p

Scotch and milk was called "moose milk" in Washington where I grew up.

N80,

My favorite is Laphroag. Single Malt. Can't get it here anymore so I usually have friends bring it in when traveling. It is 'stinky' scotch. Very dark and 'peaty'. Does not burn. I usually drink this one neat. My 'house' scotch is a blend... called Famous Gross. This I take with ice and a bit of well water. Lagavulin and Oban are great too.

A cut crystal glass helps too.

Cheers.

That would be Famous Grouse, good stuff. I like it a smidge better than JW Red Label, but I will buy which ever is the better deal at the time for "normal" drinking.

I have my wife trained to give me JW Black Label or Glenlivet for birthday or Christmas. (That alone makes her a "keeper".) Someone else alluded to this, but the really smooth stuff -- JW Black fits -- is almost dangerous over ice because it is so smooth you end up almost slobbering without realizing how much of it you already drank.

Been a scotch drinker since I was first exposed to scotch and soda by a buddy in Kadena, Okinawa in the late 60's, but really only like it now in the winter months and only over ice: my rule is, if there is a fire in the fireplace, then it is time for scotch. Never could get to like Bourbon or the Tennessee stuff, but keep some Maker's Mark and some good Canadian stuff around in case company wants some.

I suppose after all of these years my palate is all twisted up, but I also like gin (especially Beefeaters martinis), vodka, rum, tequila and a few more I cannot remember. When I lived in Florida, one standby was dark rum and orange juice...and not just for breakfast. ;-)

Yes, I drink Scotch. It's actually pretty good when you don't have a decent Bourbon, and bourbon is fine when you've run out of good Canadian whiskey. I like them, any of them, neat. Neat is fine when you've run out of ice, or water. Water is fine when I've run out of Coke, but Coke really isn't the way to drink it when the ice is all gone. Coke with anything is terrible without ice. What was the question again?

Raven,

Ah, somebody picked up on that - Famous Grouse/Gross! Good one.
I usually drink martinis in the summer... don't know why. Along with gin and tonic.
My other summer drink is Dark Rum - Goslings or Lemon Hart (don't bother with Appleton anymore) over lots of ice and water. And if I am feeling really "Irie" I have a 'Dark and Stormy" Rum with Ginger Beer (soda) and ice.

Cheers.

Got a friend who is into single malts. He used to give me a different bottle every Christmas, and I found that they are so varied that most people find some they like and some they just can't stand. He invited me to a tasting party one time. Must have spent big bucks because he had at least twenty different single malts. I was pretty well wasted by the time he brought out one of the $100 + bottles, and when I tried it I told him it tasted like paint thinner....which it did! Since then he's been giving me single barrel bourbons instead, and they are much more similar to each other, at least to my taste. I mean they all at least taste like bourbon. Some of the single malts taste so mild they are almost like good brandy. I've got a bottle of ten year old Aberlour that fits that description. It just evaporates on the tongue and leaves a nice glow.

Some of the single barrel bourbons are really light, too, but I find that I actually like what I think of as bourbon taste, while the taste of blended scotch and many of the single malts is not my favorite. Most of the Irish whiskeys taste like light scotch to me, so I tend to like them pretty well.

The latest single barrel bourbon he gave me is an 18 year old Eligah Craig. It was barreled in 1991 and bottled last year. I'd like to say it is really, really good, but in fact it is not really to my taste. Came in a fantastic bottle, however!

When I buy bourbon for myself I actually don't buy bourbon, most of the time. Being from Tennessee, I favor George Dickel, but since I'm cheap, I often buy Early Times Kentucky whiskey. It's not a bourbon, even though it is made in the right place, because it is partially aged in used sherry barrels rather than only in new oak barrels. I like the somewhat sweet bourbon flavor it has, to me at least. Turns out is is the official whiskey of the Kentucky Derby.

So....anybody into port?

Chuck,

Enlighten me on Bourbon. A friend gave me a bottle of Wild Turkey 101 last year.
When he comes back this year - early June - I will propose we crack it open. He also gave me a bottle of Glenmoragie single malt which I will share with him as well - I think he prefers bourbon... being from Virginia...???

Lloyd

PS: Haven't had port in a long time...

Its been said before scotch is an acquired taste. I drink Chivas Regal at home on special occasions. I never acquired a taste for beer or other mixed drinks. Vodka, seven and seven, bourbon, rye's are not to my taste.

PS to MossRoad, That bottle of Chivas you have must be bad by now so send it to me and I'll dispose of it properly.

Moss probably did not know that once the cap is off it must be thrown away so as to allow the bad vapours to escape!:D

One of my new business ventures is to open up an "Open Fine Liquor Bottle Disposal" Company. So if you find you have opened something that is not to you desire... I will always
accept it on the premise that if it is that bad it may be return to you.

PS: Certain conditions, applicable taxes, and refund charges apply!

Thanks for the most generous offer. That's what I like about TBN... so many folks willing to lend a hand. ;) :D :)

Not so much of a scotch drinker although if that is all there is...JWB is palatable...

Now if you like a "sipping" libation that is the ultimate companion to a fine cigar...try some Remy Martin Accord Royal 1738 ...it a cognac very smooth...a little on the pricey side but this is "sipping" stuff...(about $70)

If you want to step it up a notch try some 'Remy Martin Louis XIII'....this is the ultimate "good stuff" (about $800-$1200 bottle) with much pricier decanters available (up to $40,000)

Hennessy is good too but not as good as Remy IMO...

I tried some Remy.. xo of some sort that my dad had. I guess I'm just not tough enough. lol. Funny because my absolute favorite drink is Grand Marnier on ice. And that stuff is made with congac. Just too pricey to drink often for me. It's great over apples cooked in the oven too. Light it on fire and enjoy.

Lloyd, the Wild Turkey 101 is 101 proof, just over 50% alcohol. I don't think you can call that bourbon because the proof is too high. Check the bottle to see if it is called bourbon or just Kentucky Whiskey. The traditional bourbons are 86 proof. Bourbon is corn alcohol and is clear when first distilled, but it's aged in oak barrels that have been charred on the inside. The charcoal lends the amber color and woody taste. Bourbon barrels can only be used once and then are sold to the wine idustry where they can be reused over and over for aging wines. In the US, strict controls of the distilling process and locations of the distilleries in Bourbon County, Kentucky are required to call a liquor bourbon. Actually, I'm not sure that the distilleries have to be in Bourbon County, but it makes a good story.;)

Lloyd,

I'm sure no expert on bourbon. I mean, I like Early Times, which is not only not an official bourbon, but is also only about $10 a bottle! I think of all the corn based whiskeys as bourbon styles, since they almost all have a similar taste to me. Even the really expensive single barrel bourbons (or related whiskeys) all have that bourbon whang, which is different from what I taste in most scotch whiskeys. I got my idea about what scotch tastes like from Cutty Sark, Johnny Walker, and several other blended scotches. Some of them do taste different, but they are all identifiable as scotch whiskey. On the other hand, some of the single malt scotches don't even taste like scotch to me. The Aberlour up there on the shelf, looking at me right now, tastes more like some brandies I've had, at least some of the good brandies. You roll a bit of that on your tongue and it just seems to vaporize. Swallow it and there's no bite. Good booze! On the other hand, while I really don't like a strong scotch taste, I do like the basic flavor of bourbon, and I like one that I identify as "smooth". Unfortunately, "smooth" must mean different things to different people, or we just have different working taste buds, which is probably a good thing for most food and beverage industries!

I do find that I appreciate the stronger flavored liquors, beers and wines now than I did when I was younger. I guess that's a part of growing older and having my taste and smell receptors age along with the rest of me. These days, on a cold evening, I like a glass of Early Times, neat, or some good port if I happen to have some. The problem is I'm just so darn cheap that I can't bring myself to buy the really good ports very often, and some of the less expensive stuff is just slightly removed from MD 20/20.

Seems like you can spend as much money as you like on brandies, wines and single malt scotch. Some of those just get plain ridiculous. The single barrel bourbons look like bargains in comparison.

OK....how about apple brandy? I have only had a Calvados once, and the Laird blended applejack. I'd really like to try an un-blended American apple brandy sometime. I can't even find Laird's un-blended locally. A search on-line a while back turned up a few American apple brandies. I'm interested in part because I plan to eventually make my own cider when my trees finally make enough fruit. Since I know how to distill, I may follow in the footsteps of my East Tennessee ancestors and try my hand at some apple brandy. I've had some really nice home made fruit brandies over the years.
