Anyone drink scotch?

When I was in the US Navy, I worked part-time as a bartender in the clubs on base for about 5 years. Of course, I had the opportunity to sample all types of liquor, but I could never develop a taste for scotch. I prefer bourbon with water or seltzer. Jack Daniels is a favorite, but is not bourbon since it's from Tennessee instead of Bourbon County Kentucky. I've also tolerated some whiskey blends and even some Canadian whiskeys, but I just don't have the taste for scotch. I do like a nice gin and tonic in the summer with a twist of lime. As a matter of fact, if it's a really dry tonic, I like it straight with squeeze of lime and no gin at all. Plain seltzer water and tonic water are two of my favorite drinks over ice. The booze is nice too, but one or two at the most is plenty for me.

EDIT: Any of you scotch drinkers like Drambuie neat or a Rusty Nail cocktail?

My favourite scotch is Talisker; you can taste the Skye turf. Bells is a really nice brand that's easy on the wallet.

Nobody mentioned the world's best cocktail, the Rusty Nail; equal parts scotch and Drambuie....Don't use the Talisker for that.

As a teenager, I drank the occasional Boilermaker. A friend always gave me a hard time for, "ruining beer AND whiskey at the same time."

As for tobacco, I have loved kreteks since I was a teenager.

Here's a funny scotch story(names have been withheld protect the innocent): A man in the village where I grew up, who was very fond of scotch, had some friends over and pulled out a new expensive bottle and poured everybody a drink; neat, of course. He stepped out of the room for a minute and one fellow said to the others, "watch this when **** comes back."

Well, when the host came back the troublemaker made a sour face and asked if he could have some 7-Up to mix with the scotch. The host had quite a reaction before he realized that this friend was only joking and it made for some good laughs

All this reading about scotch makes me want a drink but all I have in the house right now is Advocaat..

If you like Drambuie, I mix 2 parts blended scotch(The stuff thats on sale, not Cutty or something expensive) and 1 part honey, Then take a vegetable peeler cut off a few strips of orange peel(only take the orange part, not the white pith). Soak the orange peel in the scotch/honey mixture for a few days and then throw it out(Orange peel not the Scotch!) Even the ladies like that one for sipping.

I used to drink scotch years ago -- until it got the better of me. I quit it cause I liked it too much. I drank Haig & Haig Pinch for the most part ....but wasn't fussy - it was all good. Now I'll have a beer now and again -- but that's it.

I recall a movie from years ago- some captured soldiers made raw alki to sell to their captures (German or French -don't remember which) and they added iodine to make it fake Scotch.
I seldom drink Scotch, but remember the scene each time I smell it.

The best scotch I've ever put in this mouth is the Balvenie DoubleWood. It is a single malt. It is tasteful and is not in the bitter realms at all like some scotches can get to. This is just my taste and if you like a Jamesons or Bushmill type of whiskey, you'll like the Balvenie.

Just to let you know that Scotch has medicinal properties.

When I was a kid in Scotland, my grandmother used to have a "wee nip" every night before bedtime to "help her sleep". She lived to be 91 years old. The way I drink the stuff I should make it to 150 or so.

Nothing wrong with Carlo Rossi, it has more to do with who your with and where you are.
One of the best wines I ever tasted was from a co-op in France. All the farmers bring their grapes in, and are crushed in the communal vat.
Then you take your plastic jug, and get yours out of what looks like an old time gas pump, and the meter tells you how much is deducted from your account. Had an absolutely fantastic dinner with some friends, probably enjoyed that wine more than some $100 a bottle ones that I,ve tasted.

We're getting off topic, but that's fine with me. I'll never be a high end wine drinker and I agree that most any decent wine, food, drink or company is better when they all come together.

Over the last year and a half I've gotten seriously into Italian cooking. And with that I'm trying to learn my way around wine, at least on a basic level. And there is a new trend in the wine world in which a younger generation of wine drinkers are paying more attention to good affordable wines as opposed to high end, high dollar limited production wines which most people wouldn't really appreciate it even if they could afford it.

There is a great website called Wine Library that has good, down to earth reviews of high quality affordable wine. (They also do the high end stuff). Two types of wine they reviewed are Prosecco and Lambrusco. Prosecco is a sparkling wine from northern Italy kind of like champagne but not as sweet. It is made in stainless steel tanks and is not aged at all. So it is very inexpensive and very popular in northern Italy. It is low in alcohol, has a very simple flavor and is great with food, especially appetizers and dessert.

The second wine is called Lambrusco. I had this for the first time in Parma Italy (family trip) where a proud local shop owner urged us to buy a bottle of local lambrusco. We loved it. It is a deep purple, grapey, sparkling (con gasata) wine. It is also not aged and is served young. It is awesome with the great northern Italian dishes like lasagna. It is also cheap.

Just got back from the store. Bought some Sparkling Lambrusco to go with some baked Penne with sausage and ricotta.
Don't know if you have Trader Joes near you, but we found a really great wine with seafood called Vinho Verde(sp?) from Portugal. Not expensive maybe $4-5 a bottle, its got a little sparkle to it when opened.

Chivas Regal would be hard to beat, in my opinion.

Someone gave my dad a bottle of 12 year old Chivas when I was, perhaps, 12 years old. He never drank it and I acquired the bottle after he passed away. I will be 49 in a few days, so, if I do the math correctly, that bottle is at least 49, just like me. I am waiting until we get a new house to open it. Hope it doesn't go bad.

Back when I dated my wife I would tank up on beer and she would drink Lambrusco. I acquired a taste for it and we still have it with Italian food to this day... 30 years later! I really like the tasted of it chilled.

I've never acquired the taste for Scotch, but this sumer I did some extensive research into Whiskey when I was in Ireland. I had a great uncle who had a shot of Whiskey each night. He lived to 95. Maybee when I stop running fire calls at night I should investigate this family tradition...

Sounds like my kinda meal! (And did you know it is very easy to make ricotta at home?)

You know, I don't believe in kharma or even fate, but whenever I make a bold claim about never having a certain ailment, failure or bad outcome it seems like it is sure to follow. I can already feel that cavity starting. So maybe I'll try a little more scotch. It might not prevent the cavity but at least I won't care.
